If the Roberts trade goes through, isn't something built around DeRosa+Dempster for Burnett still possible?

Good call. I forgot all about that rumor. Still, I don't think Hendry would be comfortable with removing Marquis from the rotation given his contract.

I don't think he's even in the rotation at this point

Right now it looks like:

Z

Lilly

Lieber

Hill

Dempster

if marquis is still on this club come opening day he will be in the rotation

Maybe Marquis is in the Roberts deal? I realize I am reaching at this point, but maybe the Os would eat Marquis' contract in order to get the Cubs to include Pie. Just spitballin' here...

Pie, Gallagher, Marquis for Roberts

Derosa, Dempster for Burnett

Murton for Byrd or sign Lofton

An awful lot of moving parts, but not totally unrealistic.

Then change up the O's trade. Something like Cedeno, Gallagher and Marquis. Might not keep Hendry from trading Murton for Byrd.

No not really. But Hendry doesn't tend to give up easily when he decides he wants a certian player. Hopefully that isn't the case this time around...

well, at least one of gallagher and marshall, if not both, will be included in the roberts deal...

so...i just don't see jim doing it...

we would be depleting our reserves for crap basically...

I seriously doubt that Juan Pierre will be a Cub again for several reasons:

a) I am assuming that Pierre has some sort of no-trade clause considering how much he was given by the Dodgers. Can someone check out the makeup of his contract?

b) Hendry seems to be "getting it" that OB% is important - especially at the top of the order (well, that doesn't make too much sense - but Soriano's SLG seems to make Piniella/Hendry happy enough).

c) I distinctly remember Pierre being asked after the last game if he is planning to return to Chicago - and his answer seemed very cold. Personally, I think he sided with Dusty and was bitter about his departure from the Cubs - and also he made comments that he wasn't real happy about the treatment Jacque Jones got from the fans. Am I the only one who remembers this? Hate to bring it up without quotes.

If Pie is dealt (hope not) I would MUCH rather see Lofton signed than Pierre traded for. It would not make any sense to trade for Pierre considering his high salary, unless we would be dumping one Marquis - who wasn't bad in the first half and probably isn't even needed in LA.

It's not a surprise the O's are interested in Jason Marquis for a simple reason:

After that buttwhooping they took at the hands of the Rangers(30-3 on August 22), the O's went on to lose games by the scores of 11-3, 15-8, 17-2, 18-6, 12-0, 11-10, 10-4, among standard scores of like 9-4, 7-2. So obviously, the O's are looking for guys who can eat up innings, unlike the guys they had last yr. They know Marquis has shown he can eat up innings in blowout losses. Hence the interests. If the Cubs can't pawned Marquis off in the Roberts deal, I would hope the Cubs would be interested in a Marquis for J. Walker deal.

Roberts and Byrd. they're the only "reported" deals that have been talked about. Burnett is almost completely fabricated here, as is Figgins

Er, no? I'm pretty sure the Figgins rumor originates from a Kaplan report on WGN Radio. I know the Burnett thing is more than just pure speculation, too, I just can't remember where it came from right now.

Hendry never even offered Pierre a return contract. He was out the door without question. Now that his cost is significantly greater in dollars, and he is older, and he is coming off a drop in production between 2006 and 2007, why in the world would Hendry suddenly covet him?

A drop in production, really? He had 8 less hits in 07 than in 06, but his average went up a point. He had 9 more runs, and 1 more RBI. Oh, and 6 more stolen bases along with an increased SB%.

Hmmmm, his SLG did go down, guess we shouldn't be looking for him to bat in the middle of the order anymore should we?

Pierre lead the league in outs in 2006

He's garbage. I can't believe anyone would seriously advocate for Pierre's return.

I wasn't pushing for his return, but rather stating that his production went up from 06 to 07.

As for acquiring him, he'd be a very nice 60 SB asset in the 8-hole, eh?

The last thing I want is for the Cubs to pick up a player more suited to the 8-hole than Ryan Theriot.

I would if he came Rafael Furcal, and 1/2 of the salary came with him. Or if he came with James Loney and Chad Billingsley for Derrek Lee and Jason Marquis.

I'd be fine getting him in a trade with the Dodgers where the Cubs make out like bandits. I like to think it's possible, given how much of a complete twit Ned Colletti is.

However, it won't be happening.

Yeah, that's pretty much the only reason for him ever to be a Cub again. The deal would have to make me say, "Man, what a lopsided deal! But we did have to take Pierre back."

I think the reds will get pierre before the cubs do. Dusty loves Juan and if that means sitting Jay Bruce or another young player we know what Dusty will do.

I'm still hoping the Reds acquire Augie Ojeda, so that the "Dusty Baker's: 'Fantasy Island" can return.

Here is another thought that I posted in the Adam Jones thread. I have read that the Ms have Wilkerson lined up to fill the opening created by trading Jones. However, I wonder if they would have interest in Murton if Hendry is indeed intent on moving him? I know Vidro is a guy that Hendry has coveted in the past. Could he still play 2nd every day? Even if the Ms sign Wilkerson, they could trade for Murton if they move Vidro and put Ibanez at DH. Again, just throwing ideas out there bsaed on who has needs and guys I know Hendry has liked. For that matter, Ibanez is a guy Hendry has targetted as well, though I don't see where he would fit with us since it looks like Soriano and Fukudome aren't likely to move to CF.

According to WSCR update. The O's have put the Jones/Bedard trade on hold because it leaked out and the O's aren't happy about it.

Just passing on what I heard!!!

got a question, can contracts be voided if they are found to be in violation of the league policy for drugs and steriods. Example: Let's say roberts had a no trade cluause (he doesn't) but he is proven to have taken them can Baltimore say ship him out despite the clause?
