It's rumored that Hendry has two deals on the table that make him very excited. (That doesn't mean they'll excite us, but who knows.)

One of course is believed to be Roberts. What price we'll pay is unknown. We all assume that Gallagher will be there, but will it be Gallagher + Cedeno+ Murton or some variation that we haven't looked at? I really don't know.

The second trade is a little more mystifying. My assumption is the second trade would be either for another pitcher or would be to acquire a centerfielder. While many here would look at Greene or another SS as the way to go, I think it's fairly easy to ascertain that route is what Hendry will do.

So, what are these deals if they really do exist?

I think one possibility that we've discussed is Figgins. I think if the Cubs trade for Figgins, it means that Pie is moved in the Roberts deal. We know the Orioles want him, and I don't see him going to the Angels. If we trade for Figgins, I anticipate DeRosa could be part of the deal. He's stated he wants to start, and the Angels might see him as a capable third baseman. So, could the deals be Gallagher + Pie + Patterson for Roberts and DeRosa + ? for Figgins? But then would including Pie in the Roberts deal allow the Cubs to sub Gallagher with another pitcher, maybe a veteran like Marquis?

I also could see the other deal being one that rids the Cubs of players that are rumored to be available such as Marquis, Murton or Dempster.

As I looked around the league, I became stricken with fear that Jim might consider this a deal to go for...

Murton to the Dodgers for Pierre and cash.

Jim loved Juan when he was here and I could see him being giddy over his return.

Finally, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of sending either Dempster or Marquis to the southside for Brain Anderson.

I can easily see a Juan Pierre deal. Easily. I think Hendry thinks he was a bright spot in 2006, not one of the reasons we sucked.

I wouldn't fear too much. Pierre makes too much money and even Hendry knows Slappy sucks after watching him for a year.

Me too. As I started thinking WWJHD, I kept hearing this voice from the burning bushes whisper the name ...Pierre. (followed by cackling laughter from the entire community called DodgerBlues...), and the more I kept trying to shake it, the image of Stymie kept coming back. It's frightening, but I could see it happening.

Remember when Jim was making good trades? Nomar, Lee, Ramirez, Barrett, etc?

I miss that Jim.

now we trade hall of famers for cesar izturis or jerry hairston

I can see him trading for Gary Matthews, Jr. before he deals for Pierre. I think the Dodgers would have to eat a ton of money for the Cubs to consider taking Pierre.

Do the O's still covet Pie if they get Jones from Seattle?

Of course not. Just like Pie's attractiveness to the Marlins died when they traded for Cameron Maybin. Just like Pie's immediate attractiveness to the Padres died when they got Jim Edmonds. We knew they liked Pie but we did not know they liked Murton earlier. We could have easily turned the two of them into a good haul. I think you know who I am talking about.

Chase Headley?

By the way, if we trade for Pierre, I might very well go on a three state killing spree. He's one of my most despised former Cubs.

Hendry never even offered Pierre a return contract. He was out the door without question. Now that his cost is significantly greater in dollars, and he is older, and he is coming off a drop in production between 2006 and 2007, why in the world would Hendry suddenly covet him?

What makes you think that? Pierre was on our team for one season and Hendry made virtually no effort to bring him back. Not to mention it seems that he values outfield defense, particularly strong arms. When Hendry likes a player, it's generally pretty easy to figure it out (i.e. he's linked to the person every offseason, resigns him to fair contracts when he's already on the team, overpays for him in free agency, etc.)

If we give up Gallagher, Pie, and Patterson for Roberts, Hendry better eat a "last supper" type meal tonight because someone from this board will probably murder him...

If we could do Pie for Roberts straight up, I might be able to digest it if we can get Figgins for DeRosa + filler.

I think Felix Pie will suck as a major league baseball player and want to trade him before his value wears out, but I just don't see including him in a trade with Gallagher and Patterson for a marginal upgrade over DeRosa.

If the Roberts trade goes through, isn't something built around DeRosa+Dempster for Burnett still possible?

Good call. I forgot all about that rumor. Still, I don't think Hendry would be comfortable with removing Marquis from the rotation given his contract.

I don't think he's even in the rotation at this point

Right now it looks like:

Z

Lilly

Lieber

Hill

Dempster

Maybe Marquis is in the Roberts deal? I realize I am reaching at this point, but maybe the Os would eat Marquis' contract in order to get the Cubs to include Pie. Just spitballin' here...

Pie, Gallagher, Marquis for Roberts

Derosa, Dempster for Burnett

Murton for Byrd or sign Lofton

An awful lot of moving parts, but not totally unrealistic.

The O's are interested in Marquis because he would give them innings (though, not good ones). However, as stated earlier, I don't think they want Pie now that they're getting Jones.

Thats how I remembered it. I thought it became clear at the end of the year that his asking price had gotten too high and they made no real effort to resign him.

Here is another thought that I posted in the Adam Jones thread. I have read that the Ms have Wilkerson lined up to fill the opening created by trading Jones. However, I wonder if they would have interest in Murton if Hendry is indeed intent on moving him? I know Vidro is a guy that Hendry has coveted in the past. Could he still play 2nd every day? Even if the Ms sign Wilkerson, they could trade for Murton if they move Vidro and put Ibanez at DH. Again, just throwing ideas out there bsaed on who has needs and guys I know Hendry has liked. For that matter, Ibanez is a guy Hendry has targetted as well, though I don't see where he would fit with us since it looks like Soriano and Fukudome aren't likely to move to CF.
