According to Cubs.com, Piniella has named his batting order if the season started tomorrow. As expected, it sucks.

Soriano

Theriot

Lee

Ramirez

Kosuke

DeRosa

Soto

Pie

Eh, I can't force myself to get too fired up about this. He'll change it about 75 times over the course of the season.

Other than Theriot, I can't really complain. As much as people want Soriano moved down in the order, it isn't going to happen.

is it wrong of me to root for Theriot to tear his ACL in Spring Training?

Really? Wishing injury?

To be fair, getting Ronny in over Theriot would project to improve the team by a few wins over the course of a season. Theriot seems like a real nice guy and all, but the least he could do is take one disabling injury for the team.

How about instead of wishing injury, we wish for something that will still keep him out for the season without being too particularly hurtful or mean. I can think of two things:

1) Having his work visa denied for the season, thereby forcing him to stay in Oz as mayor of the Oompa Loompas for another year.

2) Inconsolable grief over the death of his favorite pet goldfish, which would render him bedridden for the season.

3) The Cubs realize Theriot sucks and bench him.

I know how painful that can be... I'd sooner wish the physical pain upon him.

I'm not what I would consider a huge Theriot guy by any means, but I don't exactly have an abundance of confidence that Cedeno would do much better.

Defensively, Cedeno has the edge in range and arm at SS, but is also more inconsistent. His numbers in winter ball, even considering the less than major league quality playing surfaces, are terrible.

Cedeno and Theriot have had nearly the same amount of ML AB's, 684 for Theriot, and 688 for Cedeno. Theriot's career line is .276/.341/.379. Cedeno is .247/.277/.349. Theriot has over 2x as many walks, Cedeno has over 2x strikeouts.

Ronny had a good year in AAA, maybe he can figure it out. He is younger, so that is in his favor. But Theriot has superior numbers in almost the identical number of AB's.

It is like choosing between a taking a shot in the head or the groin, both are going to hurt.

Yeah but Theriot is the shot in the head and Cedeno is the shot in the groin. With Theriot you have almost certain death, while Cedeno has the potential for you to live a normal healthy life. When the season starts Ronny Cedeno will STILL be younger than Theriot was when he made his major league debut in '05.

I think I'd be more concerned about getting Pie out of the 8 spot than Theriot in the 2 spot.

I'm sure if Pie starts hitting like he's capable of, he won't be in the 8 spot for long.

I think they sorta go hand in hand.

Lou showed very little patience with people sucking last season. Barring a hot streak, Riot won't be in the two spot for long. Don't see anything to make a big deal about.

That's true, but given the choice I'd much prefer Pie then Soto hitting 7/8, especially against RHP.

Come on guys, I'm hoping Theriot will be fine, and I think there is a good chance he will be. He has been working hard this off season to improve his stamina and that should allow him to play like he did in April and July for more of the year than how he played in September. Ryan is also a really nice and cool guy, so it really shows how classless some of you guys are when wishing injury on the guy. If you don't want him to play, then just hope Ronny outplays him, not that he sucks enough to get benched, I would rather have two guys that are good than two guys and one that just sucked less than the other.

Haha, maybe I am letting my favoritism influence what I say, but I really hope the guy does well, and if he doesn't oh well, but just wish him the best, not the worst.

Cedeno has potential - Theriot doesn't have much. Either should be batting 8th.

unless ronny hits like he did in 2006, in which case you'd lose more games with him in the lineup.
