With the additon of Andrew Jones to the Dodger outfield along with limitations of slappy's contract could Andre Ethier be availible? Andre's overall numbers were good last year but his 'away' splits were especially good. What would it take to get this done?

LA is shopping for a starter - Maybe the Cubs should get involved in a three way with LA and Baltimore. Instead of targeting Baltimore's Brian Roberts target Ethier from LA .... facilitate Bedard to LA by shipping prospects to Baltimore

Would rather see Ethier in RF than Roberts @ 2B forcing DeRosa to super sub role. Win win situation for all three teams.

If we were going to give up enough for Baltimore to give up Bedard, I'd rather just have him.

I'm guessing that the OP was counting on LA adding significant prospects in addition to the Cubs prospects to get Bedard.

Two blurbs about Eithier from Foxsports:

Rays want Dodgers Ethier?

At the top of the Rays list may be OF Andre Ethier, a 25-year-old whom the Dodgers are now open to trade after their late Wednesday signing of Andruw Jones (two years, $36.2-million). "This makes our quest for starting pitching even more focused and perhaps even more possible," Dodgers general managerNed Colletti said. With OF Matt Kemp considered more prized, the Dodgers appear willing to offer Ethier in their efforts to upgrade their rotation. They've been rumored to be shooting as high as Orioles LHP Erik Bedard, but if they lower their sights, the Rays could tempt them with younger and cheaper alternatives. Or perhaps relief help (Al Reyes or Dan Wheeler?). And their needs could change if they land Japanese free-agent starter Hiroki Kuroda. -- St. Petersburg Times

Dodgers unlikely to trade Kemp?

The Dodgers have inquired about Baltimore Orioles left-hander Erik Bedard, but a deal for him probably would take a multi-player package that included Matt Kemp. "We are not of the mind to give up three or four prospects for one player, I'll tell you that," Colletti said. To move Kemp, Colletti added, "I'd have to have a conversation where my jaw drops. It's got to be something you can't say no to. I haven't heard anything like that. In fact, teams have stopped asking." That seemed to imply that Andre Ethier could be dealt for a mid-level pitcher. -- LA Times

Getting Eithier for a "mid-level pitcher", "younger pitcher", or "relief help" all sound like something the Cubs could manage. If they miss out on Fukudome, use Murton/Eithier platoon in RF. If they sign Fukudome, play him in CF and deal Pie for a SS. If nothing else, Eithier could be great in freeing up Murton, Pie, or Eithier himself as as trade bait to obtain a SS.

The Dodgers have shown a lot of interest in lefty starters this offseason and the Cubs seem dead set on a lefty outfielder. I wonder if Ethier for Marshall might not satisfy both of them.

They wouldn't settle for less than Hill.

It can't hurt to ask - I'd be up for it, although I wouldn't give up Hill for him. He'd probably put up similar numbers to Fukudome, right? Or am I off base?

I was thinking this same thing, unfortunately. Do they have any non-amazing pitching prospects that could be packaged w/ Ethier in a deal for Hill?

I would expect a bit more power from Ethier, minus the defense.

and I wouldn't settle than anything less than Kemp for Hill

we already have andre ethier... his name is matt murton

Oho! You set yourself up for this one.

Matt Murton is useless because he is _ _ _ _ _-handed. If Matt Murton were _ _ _ _-handed like Andre Ethier, life would be easier.

Now let's play fill in the blanks.

Was noted that Ethier is LH Murton. Is he really as lousy and Pierre-armed defensively in RF as Murton? I don't know much about Ethier's D.

But it would be fun to have a 9-inning guy in RF, rather than somebody who you want to take out for a no-hit defensive replacement every time you're winning in the late innings, as with Murton.

If Ethier is perfectly satisfactory defensively, I agree that he'd be a very nice fallback option. Young guy who, especially if partnered with Murton, could give you solid low .800's OPS for low pay, and leave the money for elsewhere.

It's hopeful that next year, we might have some meaningful new costs. Like, if Wood pitches well his salary could jump. If Prior was to be back and look good 2nd half, he too could be a major expense to retain should we desire. And unpopular as board may consider it, it's even possible that Dempster will turn out to be an effective rotation guy and be an expense next year.

I really don't have a sense for Ethier's value in the trade world, or exactly what LA will end up needing. Hill is too much, but if Marshall is too little, what about Marshall/Wuertz? Still too little for them? Way too much for us?
