can't they tender an offer and continue to negotiate?
They can if Prior's willing to negotiate as opposed to just go through arbitration.

From Paul Sullivan's column this morning:

Hendry must offer Prior arbitration Wednesday or non-tender him and make him a free agent. Barring a last-minute trade or the unlikely occurrence of Prior signing a one-year deal with an option, the one-time ace and building block for the future seems headed for the non-tender list.

The end of an era in Chicago sports is upon us.

As eras, go, it was a short one, but it was memorable nonetheless.

Unless both sides are willing to come together on some sort of agreement, Mark Prior's days as a Cubs pitcher will end today at midnight.

Dec. 12 is the deadline for teams to tender contracts to their players, and it appears the Cubs are not willing to do that with Prior under the current circumstances.

Forgive my cynicism, but I can't help but imagine Hendry was pushing hard for a December 11/12 decision date by Fukudome to make the Prior news backpage stuff.

Levine was just on espn1000 and said barring any last minute trades Prior will be non-tendered. He said he and his agent refused to do a 2 year deal. Nice knowing you Mark don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I wanted Prior back but if he won't take a two year deal, what's the point? Pay him to not pitch again?

Exactly. Let's face it, the guy doesn't want to be a Cub anymore. There's probably a lot of truth to him wanting out years ago.

Pay him to see if you can get 3-4 months of quality pitching out of him this season, and then see what you can do about resigning him next offseason.

But what if you can't and you now use the money for another pitcher that can have an impact now?

It sounds like he doesn't want to be a Cubs anymore, so why pay for his rehab only to see him leave through FA? What is risky and might work out in our favor is to pay his rehab hope he shows that he can pitch very well then trade him before the deadline when his value is real high. I think that's too risky though and I don't think the Cubs will do that.

It sucks because you think of what was and maybe he could come close to that again. That said I think it might be best for both sides to just move on. I think setting up a rotation last year that didn't depend on him coming back was key to having the success that we had. At some point it's a shadow on the organization that becomes a curse of false hope expecting a savior to come out.

Hopefully he signs with the Twins and all the rubes who cried about how evil Prior's dad was by supposedly saying his son wouldn't play there have to choke on it.

So I guess that brings the number of people who hated playing for the Cubs up to two: Ismael Valdes and Prior. I'd love to see him reunited with Dusty.

Jacque Jones and Latroy Hawkins...just off the top of my head.

They aren't going to find any pitcher of any value for $3 million.

No but they can use the 3 and some other cash to get one. If Prior's 3 ties them up and stops them from getting another starter plus him being on the DL it ties up their hands to make a good move. Plus, how is paying 3 for a guy to rehab all year worth anything?

I believe the right move is to tender him to give you more time to trade him.

If he's non-tendered, there's likely going to be so much interest in him that he won't have to settle for a sub-arb contract.

I wonder how much interest Hendry really has had regarding Prior.

If Mark Prior were the money hungry chump you wish he was, wouldn't he want to show off he can still pitch for a month or 2 before entering free agency. Nobody's gonna give him a huge deal if he doesn't pitch this season.

I am going to boo the crap out of Prior if he ever faces the Cubs in Wrigley again.

And then 3 hours later leave the park depressed because he just threw 8 innings of shutout ball

I won't boo him at all. The Cubs treated him like garbage.

Jeeze, thanks for telling me what I think. Prior has been a shrewd businessman when it comes to contracts and he knows what will bring him the best value. He doesn't have to pitch this year to prove that and he can throw in his own controlled environment at his own speed and he'll get a decent offer, especially if he's as good as you all think he's going to be. Funny how GM's seem to not be knocking on Hendry's door to acquire him.

I think it went both ways. And I think Prior wanted out of Chicago long before the Cubs lowballed him in contract talks last offseason.

1) Tender him a contract

2) Wait till he comes back to pitch

3) Let him pitch well to build his value up and help the team

4) Toward the end of the season, give him the Baker treatment and overpitch him to the point of massive injury

5) Make him get injured again

6) Release into the open waters of free agency! Thanks for the help! Seeya on the mound in two years!

j/k of course. At this point I could care less what happens. My personal preference is try and keep him around for one more year to see if he performs well for at least a month or so, and use that as trade bait, but that doesn't appear to be happening. Oh well
