Hank Blalock-3B-Rangers Dec. 3 - 1:49 pm et

The Rangers are shopping Hank Blalock and have discussed him with the Dodgers, Yahoo! Sports' Steve Henson reports.

Blalock is due $5.95 million in 2008. Yhere's a club option in his contract for 2009 worth $6.2 million. We imagine the Rangers are asking for Andy LaRoche and more in return for Blalock. There wouldn't be much reason for the Dodgers to keep LaRoche if they acquired a veteran third baseman.

If he could play right field I'd be very interested. That said, I'm almost certain he can't.

He could play left, but of course moving Soriano to right field hasn't crossed Jimbo's mind.

Not that I'm saying Blalock is the answer at the 'open' OF spot.

I'm inclined to believe moving anyone from their spot has never crossed Hendry's mind. ARod and Cabrera are third basemen, and we already have one of those. He's looking for someone who already plays RF and bats lefty.

Probably, but I bet he'll take anybody who has a reputation of being a good fielding LF or CF as well.

Scott Rolen-3B-Cardinals Dec. 3 - 5:05 pm et

The Dallas Morning News reports that the Cardinals and Rangers may be discussing a swap of Scott Rolen and Chris Duncan for Hank Blalock.

Including Duncan could be a way for the Cardinals to avoid having to pay much of Rolen's $12 million-per-year salary. It'd be an interesting gamble for the Rangers. They'd get older at third base and they'd have to hope Rolen's shoulder heals up well, but it's possible that Rolen would prove to be an upgrade from Blalock and Duncan would fit nicely at first base.

I guess technically yes, that is a possibility. But it's a very unlikely one.

Here's the link on the DMN report.

Here is what I have and I have to say this is dangerous unsubstantiated rumor-mongering, but there is some talk circulating through the lobby that the Rangers and St. Louis are discussing a deal that would send Hank Blalock to the Cardinals. The Rangers supposedly would receive third baseman Scott Rolen and oufielder/first baseman/DH Chris Duncan. Not sure what else the Rangers might have to include, if anything. Not sure how they money situation would work out since Rolen is owed $39 million over the next three years.

The deal would make some sense on many levels. It could give the Rangers a 2-for-1 deal on power bats. It would give them a left-handed hitter in Duncan whose swing is perfectly built for Arlington.

The deal makes no sense on the Rangers end. Why would they want to take on an aging, injury-plagued 3rd baseman who's getting paid very well? Duncan is decent, but he's not good enough to take Rolen with him.

Duncan is the type of hitter that might excel at the Ballpark in Arlington.

I can see the Rangers motivation for the move. This one wouldn't surprise me at all.

If the Rangers took on all of the money I would be ok with this deal. But isnt Blalock coming off of a similar shoulder injury that kind of worries me. But if they took on all the money then the Cards spent it on another OF bat I would be ok with it.

I know the Pirates have had a thing for Blalock for a while. He'd be a pretty good fit there. I wonder if anything could be done with Bay and Blalock as the primaries.
