I'm really hoping that somebody overpays for him looking at his potential and if the Cubs can add him to a blockbuster deal to get an impact player I'd be thrilled. I really see him having a 500 career with a worse than average WHIP once he actually can pitch. If the Cubbies can get more value than that I'd like the deal.

there's no way the cubs will get more value than a slightly below league average starting pitcher if they trade prior right now.

Will Carroll from BP:

The Cubs have several things simmering at once, but even after missing out on Kaz Matsui, they're still focused on Japan. A big preemptive offer to Kosuke Fukudome could be made soon, as the cubs focus on adding lefty bats. They're also willing to deal spare parts like Ryan Dempster, Scott Eyre, and Matt Murton.

I know Carroll isn't usually dependable for transaction rumors, but I really hope he's right about possibly dealing Eyre and Dempster. The big preemptive offer to Kosuke seems to fit Hendry's MO too. Hope that other teams save Hendry from himself with regard to Murton and we keep him at least as a 4th OF or the RF with Fukudome in CF if Pie struggles hard core.

I would have thought that, but that's also when I wouldn't have thought there's be a line around the corner asking about him. If there's a market, someone might overpay.

Jim Hendry = Best Buy on Black Friday... People are lining up...nobody's overpaying.

I read on Cardstalk that there is a possible Scott Rolen for Chris Capuano trade being discussed.

I seriously have to wonder about the availability of Ryan Braun. If the Cardinals get a 3B, there's going to be a dogfight between LaPorta and Braun in LF. I don't really see either being able to play elsewhere in the OF for the Brewers.

Ha, thats a very good and accurate analogy. However, I can't help but be optimistic no matter how many times it bites me in the ass.

I dunno if this has been mentioned yet, but my friend sent it to me earlier:

"The Dallas Morning News reports that the Cardinals and Rangers may be discussing a swap of Scott Rolen and Chris Duncan for Hank Blalock."

Check the Hank Blalock thread.

-- The Rangers had talks with Arizona about Carlos Gonzalez, the New York Mets about Carlos Gomez and the Chicago Cubs about Felix Pie. But the Diamondbacks wanted top pitching prospect Eric Hurley, the Mets were interested in trading for catcher Gerald Laird and the Cubs have decided that Pie will be their center fielder.

Well, he is a left-handed outfielder with speed, should've been a no brainer for Jim.

Didn't the mets already trade for a couple catchers why do they want another one?

Minaya sees what the Hendry is doing with second basemen, and wants to do the same with catchers.

That's fine that they named him the staqrter and all because he's a guy we already have and is cheap for what should be slightly below average production.

I guess I'm just wondering if you're happy we've decided on him or the assumption that he's going to have an awesome season?

Posted
I'm guessing that Prior privately requested a fresh start on a new team or has pretty much threatened to not sign next season.

I heard Bruce Levine on the radio with Waddle and Silvy this morning when he talked about Rowand, Prior, Swisher, etc (I think there is a thread on it)...

At any rate, Levine was pretty emphatic (paraphrased): both sides are tired of each other. The relationship has clearly soured. He wants nothing to do with them, and they probably feel the same way.

I don't have any inside information, but I strongly believe the Mark Prior era in Chicago comes to an end this week.

They probably had that conversation with the Mets before the Mets made the deal with the Nats.

I'm probably a glutton for punishment, but I really liked the way Eyre pitched in the second half. Between his $3.8M and Ohman's $1.8M, I'd rather trade Ohman, which I know goes against CW. I have no issue with the Cubs dealing Dempster (I hear Toronto's owner is interested), but I would prefer it if they traded Marquis. I think the Cubs should hold onto Murton.

I see some Brewer rumors. Here's what I've heard (mostly from stories cribbed from the Milwaukee paper and radio talks with Melvin or others):

Jim Bowden has "repeatedly" asked after Rickie Weeks for Chad Cordero. Melvin is smart not to give him up, I think. Weeks seems primed for a big year, and Cordero is, well, he's great, but he still only pitches 70 innings a year. Bowden has pulled off a couple of real steals lately, and I think he's now asking for the moon.

Rolen for Capuano - Braun would move to left field, and Rolen would be around for, what, three years? LaPorta most likely won't be ready in 2008, and only maybe in 2009. I dunno - it'll probably take Capuano + to not get laughed out of the room, let alone make the deal.

Ben Sheets - there was a crazy rumor about Sheets-Hall-prospect to the Braves for Soriano-Francoeur-K Johnson. Apparently Atlanta is no longer so high on Francoeur, but I'd take that deal in a heartbeat. Also, the Dodgers have expressed interest in Sheets as well. I like that idea - right now, the Dodgers are just stupid enough to deal some of their very-high-ceiling young talent to appease the old losers on that club, and I'd be ecstatic if the Brewers were the team (trust me, someone will) to take advantage.

we can get McLouth for a crappy reliever.

what's the point in getting him unless we move Pie for starting pitching/SS help?

He'll probably hit lefties better than Pie but he certainly won't hit righties as well.
