Why don't you kick that?

Unfortunately for you and soccer, it was a good decision. Even if you don't convert, you're forcing MSU to go at least 55 yards or so to get in field goal range with only around 45 seconds left. If you do get it, all you have to do is take a couple of knees and you get the W.

It was only a good decision in hindsight. It was an easy kick. You make it, kick it off and then make them get into the endzone to win.

If you don't make the kick, they get the ball back at around their 30 yard line. I would've went for it no matter what.

And if you don't make the 1st down marker they start 7 yards further away but have to travel 30 yards less.

They aren't the same benefit. You get the 1st(which was only a yard) and the game is over, you kick the FG and you just make it really hard for them to win.

It should be noted that BC's kicker is only 11 out of 17 on the season, and only 4 out of 9 on kicks between 30-40 yards. A 37 yarder for him is not exactly a chip shot.

The right decision is to go for it. They have about as good of a chance to make the first down on 4th and 1 as making the field goal with their kicker (studies show that making a first down on 3rd or 4th and 1 is well over 50 percent). Getting the first down ends the game, while kicking the field goal just makes it harder for Michigan State.

Plus, if you make the field goal, you have the kickoff to worry about. Michigan State returned every kickoff in the game to the 30 or better and broke one to the BC 18.

Yeah, if only the would have converted their previous short yardage play instead of fumbling the snap.

And I'm sure they would have pooched the kick off considering MSU would have had to score a touchdown.

Hopefully Oregon State can hold this lead and help me come out close to even today - I have them at -5.5.

By the way, have you heard anything on the coordinator front? Last I heard we were going to interview Rob Spence of Clemson. That was Friday I believe.

It is almost official that Spence will remain at Clemson, and that only solidifies the belief that Kippy has accepted the OC job at Tennessee.

We still need a RB coach, QB coach, and TE coach. One of those will likely be the recruiting coordinator. Joe Whitt, Jr's name keeps getting mentioned, though he has primarily been a DB coach. Not sure that he'll transition to the offensive side of the ball, and unless Slade is fired/quits, there is no room on defense.

We shall see.

Thanks for the update Hosak. I'm pretty happy with the idea of Kippy Brown - apparently he was a pretty good recruiter when he was on Tennessee's staff previously, do you know anything about his recruiting ability.

Mixed bag, though the general consensus is that he's a better coach than recruiter. He coached WR's during the WRU days, though there isn't much on record as to the role he's played in getting players to campus. Of course, Fulmer wants his coordinators to be coaches first, and will find recruiters for other positions.

Not saying it will happen, but Frank Cignetti's name has emerged as a candidate. I still think it's Kippy's job to lose, but at least Fulmer is giving the appearance of a national search. But, for positional guys, I'm hearning names like Jay Graham, TD Woods, and even Randy Sanders, so Fulmer is apparently not going to recreate himself just yet.

Long and short of it all: It's most likely Kippy, but nothing is settled. Rumor also has it that Fulmer secretly interviewed someone last night in Tampa. I'll let you know once I hear about that one in detail.

Oh my. Martz will be fired by the Lions, and Kipy will become the new OC, according to the LA Times. The coach that Fulmer interviewed in Tampa last night is former Michigan OC MIke Debord.

Stay tuned. This soap opera is just getting good.

The Lions are firing Mike Martz and promoting Kippy Brown? Holy cow, that changes everything it seems. Also, I'm not sure I like the idea of Debord - though I'll admit I don't know a ton about him. Any Michigan fans care to expound on him?

Also Hosak, thanks a lot for the updates. I really appreciate you keeping me up to date.
