As has been discussed to death, the Roberts trade is a significantly better deal *if* DeRosa gets the starting job at SS as his infield partner. Now you're basically replacing Theriot's production with Roberts, and that is more than a minor improvement.

Is it possible the O's want Theriot and that's what's holding up this blockbuster of a thread....I mean trade?

What's holding up the deal is that the O's don't know what they want, they just know it always needs to be "more."

This is also why they suck at baseball.

More more more...how do you like me how do you like me. So what you're saying is that the O's are like Disco. Deep. :stickman:

What's holding up the deal is the lack of a sure-thing prospect from the Cubs. The Orioles really don't know what they are getting from the Cubs in any of the myriad projected scenarios. They're likely getting 4 young guys, lots of potential, but nobody that definitively slots as a full-time player or rotation guy.

This uncertainty won't change, as the Cubs don't have the missing piece they crave. What's infuriating is that they won't decide whether or not to take the gamble on the players available. At some point you either dive in or climb down. Quit standing on the bloody board quivering like a moron.

The O's certaintly didn't get any "sure-thing prospects" from either the Astros or the Mariners. Granted they got some talented youngsters, but NOT ONE of them, including Adam Jones is a lock to become a great player. So if the O's are holding up a Roberts trade because they want a "sure-thing prospect" (and let me remind you, a "sure-thing prospect" doesn't exist, all prospects have some doubt about their future), then they are being hypocrits. My guess is...Angelos is what is holding up this trade.

Hendry: 'DeRosa at second base, I'm thrilled'

"All we really need before Opening Day is one more guy that can help us out in the outfield, and especially a guy that can play center, we're going to do that. I put that on myself a while back."

Hendry still expects to bring in a reserve outfielder by the end of the week, but couldn't predict when it would get done.

"The other trades that are bantered around, you really can't control the other half of the equation," he said. "I feel bad for Mark, but we're all tired of reading about it, and he knows from my perspective that it was never a reflection on him."

Rosenthal says the trade isn't happening.

The Cubs will not trade for Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts before opening day, according to major-league sources.

The teams have been unable to reach an agreement on the players that the Orioles would receive in return. While a revival of the discussions is always possible, the two sides are at an impasse.

Way to waste 3 months on Roberts and leave us stuck with a top of the order of Theriot/Soriano, Jimbo.

That is good news. The Orioles were overvaluing Roberts. He would have been nice to have, but to give up four players for someone who is a marginal upgrade at a position that isn't a place of need would not have been a good allocation of resources. I'm glad that Jim has decided to move on.

YES! Finally! Lock the damn thread.

Maybe this opens the door for Patterson to make the big league squad. If DeRosa is needed in more of a super sub role (whatever that is), I'd like to see Patterson get some reps at 2b rather than Fontenot. And I'm especially not keen on the idea of a middle infield of Cedeno/Theriot if DeRosa is spelling someone else.

BTW, by no means do I think the trade is dead. Classic "we're thrilled to have DeRosa at 2B"/"We're not trading Roberts" exchange here.

Don't fool yourselves, folks... Rosenthal saying "it's over" doesn't mean that it's actually over.

I secretly want this thread to cross the 300 page plateau. That way we can say we talked about nothing for 300 pages.

That's not exactly a well-kept secret.

Especially since it isn't opening day yet. I would think opening day will end the speculation until the trade deadline.

Well, it was a mighty fine secret until YOU decided to let the cat out of the bag.

I didn't let it out. It clawed its way out while I was digging the hole to bury it in.
