Well this account was pretty quick getting activated, but I have tried about three or four other accounts that never got activated, don't know why?? All the usernames were pretty similar to this one, so I don't think it was anything in the username that was profane or anything like that. But yeah, I have been reading this site for about three years now and I am a big fan. I don't always agree with everyone, but they are all cubs fans, so I love them all. But disagreeing is what message boards are for.

Long time reader, first time poster (mostly to the fact that, I have tried now about five different names to get on here, and finally the mods accepted me) but my opinion on this situation is Roberts would be GREAT for us. I can understand the fact that people try and say that he isn't that much of an upgrade over Derosa, and that is a big maybe, but I can somewhat see where yall are coming from. The thing is though Dero is a unbelievable upgrade over Fontenot or Cedeno on the bench. When it comes to the Soriano situation, if I truly believed Alfonso could move down in the order and still produce like he does in the number one spot, I would want him hitting 4 or 5 strictly so he could drive more runs in. The thing is though it doesn't seem as if he feels comfortable at all hitting there so I say leave him at 1 and bat Roberts in the two hole if we get him. Everyone on here knows come opening day they would love to see Roberts hitting 2nd instead of Theriot, no matter if you are for or against the trade. Plus B Roberts is a South Carolina boy, and I am a huge fan, so I have a little biased opinion when it comes to that. Maybe Justin Smoak can slip to us, or in all seriousness, kind of off topic, (when it comes to this thread, yall have talked about everything, so I don't honestly think anything is off topic) but Reese Havens has been killing it for USC this year, if he keeps doing what he is doing, I would love to see the Cubs draft him at 19. (I think that is their pick???)

We have a bunch of posters from your state so maybe you picked the same name as they had.

I'll add my two cents despite only quickly reading the previous posts.

Yeah, that one season was definitely a fluke, but who's to say he still won't put up at least an .800 OPS? He hits for average and usually has a pretty decent OBP. He won't hit 20 hRs again, but he could still hit 10-12, especially at Wrigley.

He still hasn't hit 20 hr's for the first time, so I doubt he'll do it again either. He topped out at 18 'on the juice'. I don't really factor PED's into why a guy who was considered a very good prospect might have an outlier year. It was also his second, full, healthy season. And we are talking about 18 home runs. He's not exactly Brady Anderson.

Well, me and your sister have that in common, because I go to USC too. I've always lived in Columbia though. It is great school and a great town.

O's wanted Hill and Colvin. If we don't give them Hill, they will want more than 2 players.

This guy keeps coming in here at random times and posting stuff like this as though he has some form of inside info. Does anybody know who he is?

I am Peoriaman! :)

That is what the O's wanted. They call cedeno, Marshall, etc "spare parts". Roberts is an all-star and they want one very good major MLB player in return. That is Hill.

Hill is better and much cheaper than Roberts.....i dont know if Andy would have even asked for him cuz he already knew the answer

The Cubs went to the O's. You had better believe the O's weren't shy about who they wanted from the Cubs. They wanted and asked for Hill. Roberts is an all-star. Just the facts.

Roberts was the LONE all-star on a 69 win team. That's like the prettiest ugly chick left in the bar!! Come on.

Heh heh. I like this guy.

Don't mind me, I just wanted to share my favorite post in this neverending thread:

For my 16,000th post, I have decided to post something that is thought-provoking and deep compared to the current discussions going on. You will find it is quite relevant to this thread.

The latest rumors aren't 4 for 1 anymore, there more like 5 (or 6) for 2. However many players are going to the O's, it better not include any more top prospects.

IDC, if it becomes a 5 or 6 for 2, then they will be taking Donnie Veal's and Sean Marshall's of the Cubs system, over the Sean Gallagher's of the system. There is no way I would part with Gallagher plus change in a 5/6 for 2 deal that has the Cubs talking back Jay Payton. Now if it becomes a 5/6 for 3 trade.....it wouldn't be my favorite deal, but I could live with it. If the O's would do Payton/Roberts/Sherrill for Gallagher/Marquis and whoever they like (and the Cubs are willing to part with) and are not on the 40 man roster, I could live with it. I wouldn't be estactic, but I could live with it.

Time to stir the pot (from OH):

Heyman of SI was just on Mike& the Maddog saying he thinks a deal will be done today or tommorow. He said he personally talked to Roberts today and he is real excited about the possibilty of playing for the Cubs.He said the deal will be Gallagher,Marshall,Cedeno and a young pitcher he does not no who.I think it will be Ceda or Veal.

I don't know if its true. This guy has posted true info before (user name Harry Carry). It's probably not true because it goes against everything we've heard lately (no Marquis or Payton)

Just in case anyone cares, or believes this. This is courtesy of Harry Carry (I know, he didn't spell it right) over on OH....

Yikes!!! That's a boatload for Roberts.

****EDIT*** My bad people, didn't realize that it had posted twice while I was writing. I'll use the Joe Dirt line "I'm new!!" as my excuse.

I posted the link to the podcast on OH, and one of the posters listened and said this about it:

I listened to the podacst.

He says in that he doesn't think it will happen today or tomorrow but he would be shocked if it didn't eventually happen.

He did say that BR seemed excited when he talked to them today...and he did mention the names Marshall, Gallagher, Cedeno and a 4th but only in terms that 'those are the names I've consistently heard' or something like that.

Looks like a false alarm.

listening now.

i think it will happen

not sure if it will happen today or tomorrow

Cubs and orioles need to do more scouting

names i've heard, combination of gallagher marshall, cedeno murton and a few others.

payton may be involved

roberts seems enthusiastic, millar told him to pretend he was hurt

i think roberts will be gone, it just makes too much sense

i will be shocked if deal isn't consumated

Yeah he really didn't say anything like that. Said the trade makes to much sense not to do. Didn't say he thinks it would happened today or tomorrow, but rather that he didn't know if it would happen today or tomorrow. He did talk to Roberts, and that Roberts seems very interested in becoming a Cub without actually saying that so that part was true.

I do feel a little dumber having to listen to two New Yorkers for 10 minutes on talk radio.

Long time reader, first time poster (mostly to the fact that, I have tried now about five different names to get on here, and finally the mods accepted me)

I actually had more or less the same problem, if anyone's interested. It took a few weeks to get this screen-name activated after a few other unsuccessful attempts, not that it really matters.

Anyway that gave me an excuse follow in the footsteps of the many brave souls who made their first post in this absolutely epic thread.

As for the actual subject matter of this thread (if it can even be said to have a "subject" in the normal sense of the word), I have my doubts. It's been suggested that adding Roberts helps the bench by moving DeRosa too it, but I'm not convinced.

The bench w/o Roberts (assuming no other trades) looks like this along w/ the roles each player backs-up:

Murton (LF & RF)

Ward (1B & RF in a pinch)

Fuld (OF)

Cedeno (SS, 2B)

Blanco ©

w/ DeRosa @ 3B, RF, LF, and SS when needed.

W/ Roberts it looks like this (I'm assuming Payton comes over, and Cedeno is gone)

Payton (OF)

Ward (1B & RF)

DeRosa (IF, LF, and RF)

Cintron (SS, since DeRosa really can't)

Blanco ©

If they don't get stuck with Payton, they still have to carry Fuld over Murton or they have no CF back-up for Pie.

The latter bench has less Right-handed pinch hitting potential as far as I can tell (I prefer Murton to DeRosa and Payton, whom we might not get anyway), and a lesser back-up at Short (I'll take Cedeno over Cintron). And even without Roberts, DeRosa can still function asa super-sub.

Also in the latter case Murton simply doesn't have a job, though he may end up elsewhere regardless. Of course, If he is traded, I suppose I have no case, but still.

That said I still think Roberts is enough of an upgrade to make it worth it, but I really don't think it helps the bench at all, at least not without some other trades (like a SS who can move Theriot to the bench... if only...)

I think the Cubs are hoping to God that Cedeno is serviceable as a CF so they can let Fuld/Pie play full time at AAA to get at bats and build trade value.

If not, wtf are they going to do, keep Fuld AND Pie on the big league roster and option Murton?
