Bruce says one thing, everyone else says another. I'd tend to side with Bruce, but I don't know. I just want to hear a trade has been made or hasn't been made.

Let's make it easy.....who do YOU think has more acess to what the Cubs are thinking....OH "sources", Ken Rosenthal, or Bruce Miles?

To me it's easy.....unlike OH "sources" and Rosenthal, Miles is pretty straight forward kind of journalist. I would say believe Miles, who has ties to the Cubs, over anybody else.

Yeah, I trust him more than the others, no question. I'm just saying all the conflicting reports are making my head spin.

Contrary to popular belief, knowledgeable Cubs sources say the two teams have not gotten serious about discussing specific players the Orioles would want for Roberts.

It's highly unlikely the Cubs will trade center-field prospect Felix Pie or former top draft pick Tyler Colvin for Roberts. But a package possibly involving pitcher Sean Marshall or Sean Gallagher plus another player seems more in the ballpark.

Is anyone else having a deja vu moment? I could have sworn that the Miles excerpt was from an article written weeks ago in response to something Phil Rogers posted at the Tribune...

Uh, no. It's just that after nearly 180 pages of discussion here and stuff that's been nothing more than speculation on mainstream media blogs (see Trib) and blogosphere blogs, certain truths have been constant: The Cubs have been steadfast in saying they weren't going to trade Hill, Pie or Colvin. That was true earlier, and it's true now. Talks between the Cubs and Orioles have never gotten to the "yes" or "no" stage despite a report during the convention that the Baltimore owner nixed a 7-for-2 trade. The Cubs remain interested in Roberts. The names I've put out there are the ones I've been led to believe they'll discuss with the Orioles. The Cubs feel it's too early in Colvin's developmental stage to trade him, especially after investing a top draft pick. The Orioles are going to finish last or next-to-last with or without Roberts. The way I read it, the Cubs feel that MacPhail might as well take a decent offer for Roberts and not try to hold people up or risk being stuck with him, if "stuck" is the right word. I've read all kinds of things about deals being close. Nothing has been close. That may change in the next few days, but it seems to me the Cubs are ready to move on with or without Roberts.

I'd offer a package of high ceiling lower level prospects that includes players like Veal and Ceda and maybe a Murton or Patterson and tell MacPhail to take it or leave it.

That's about right. But I do doubt very, very much the Cubs will be trading Ceda any time soon. They really like him.

Hey Bruce, what are your odds on this trade happening? And what other players do you feel Hendry is unwilling to trade? Anyone we haven't heard mentioned?

I'd say the odds are 50-50 at best on this trade happening. Nobody is an "untouchable" in the right trade, but guys like Colvin, Hill, Pie and Ceda aren't going in this kind of deal. I'm sure MacPhail had a hard enough time selling the owner on the Bedard trade. Can you imagine Andy telling Angelos he's going to trade his favorite-son player for a guy or guys he's never, ever heard of, especially guys who haven't played above Double-A ball?

I would rather that the Cubs just stand pat at this point. Hopefully Cedeno and Pie can have breakout years. I think that what happens with those two makes or breaks the season. The Cubs offense can not afford for both to disappoint because that would mean two big holes in the lineup - Pie in CF and Theriot at SS since Cedeno doesn't win the job from him. My problem with the Roberts trade from the beginning is that acquiring him would use quality assets from the organization but not solve either of the two lineup concerns (SS and CF). It would only make sense if DeRosa or Roberts had been able to move over to SS and replace Theriot but from what I have read neither is a viable option there.

Bruce, do you know of anything else the Cubs are looking at trade/player wise?

Also, you're my hero. Again.

Please tell me that there were serious internal discussions exploring ways to improve shortstop this offseason. Whether it be for Khalil Greene, Miguel Tejada, Edgar Renteria, or a sack of bones. I just don't understand how they can be so oblivious to the one big glaring whole on the team (and in the farm system for that matter). It'll make me sleep better if they know it's a hole, but just couldn't find a viable solution to it...yet.

They'd been looking at Marlon Byrd, but Texas isn't an easy organizaton with which to deal, either. That's the hardest thing for most people to grasp. To make a trade, you need to teams to have mutual interest, and even then, most trades don't go down for whatever reasons. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs tried to make a deal toward the end of spring training if this Roberts thing doesn't get done.

Shortstop never was a priority. I don't know why this whole Greene thing got started _ just because he didn't agree to an extension? There's time for that. The Padres don't need to move him. The ship sailed on Tejada awhile back. I never heard Renteria's name talked about seriously.

Typical Cubs. Any word on if they will give Derosa a shot at SS if they can get Roberts?

I doubt they'd try to make him their full-time shortstop. If they keep Cedeno and he has a great spring, I could see him starting and Theriot falling into the utility role.

I think it was speculation by either Rogers or a San Diego writer in July. I just think Greene will break out once he escapes Petco. It's unfortunate that he's still there. It's costing him millions of dollars when he becomes an FA. It's too bad the Cubs think Theriot's fine and dandy. Maybe after another year of him falling on his face they'll get it. Kinda like they did with Izturis. Then we can actually sign Furcal this time. (Okay not really but you ruined my sleep tonight).

I really hope thats right, but it sure seems like the Cubs have a major hard on for Theriots mediocrity.

That's the best case scenario I think. The only problem is that Cedeno's going to have a short hook no matter what. I think if he goes through one bad slump for a week or two (face it all hitters do) he's going to lose his job and Theriot can hit the same and keep it. It's unfair but it's the way it's worked out. Cedeno's got nice upside, not great but certainly average starting ML ss. he keeps killing AAA so it's only a matter of time. unfortunately itll probably be with another organization if he gets a chance at all.

Somewhat off topic: Does anyone think that if most of the posts weren't reply quoting a quote of a quote of a quote of a quote and so on that we'd be over 100 pages?

Bruce, what are your thoughts on Crane Kenney's comments that the Cubs had already put enough on the table in two trades that he felt confident they could get done? I would assume one of those has to be Roberts, and it would contradict your statement about them never talking specifics of players in the deal (not saying your wrong, just wondering).

I was wondering the same thing.
