"Source" jokes were funny about 150 pages ago. It gets a little old

Unless it's something gold. Not something where you can insert any noun in the dictionary to complete the sentence 8-)

SweetZombieJesus's was more of a Futurama reference. Which are always welcome.

I love a good Futurama reference.

Maybe we can insert Bender's personality into Jim Hendry.

My sources tell me that source jokes are still kinda funny. I'm waiting to see what the guys at OH say on the issue, though.

I'd probably do it at this point.

Wow... is there a trade you wouldn't do, I'm curious? This is getting ludicrous. We're getting into insane territory here. Giving up our two best pitching prospects plus an outfielder and a shortstop with some definite upside for Brian Roberts? The White Sox gave up their two best pitching prospects and a nothing guy in Ryan Sweeney and got back Nick Swisher, who won't make any money for the next five years, this is fairly preposterous.

I also don't like the equivocating. "Well Gallagher was already in the deal and Veal is a strikeout lefty who has control problems and Murton and Cedeno there's no place for them..." I don't think the Braves, when they were trading Saltalamacchia and the rest for Teixeira said "Hey, we've got no place for these guys, let's just give them away for anyone." Come on here.

At the beginning of the offseason people would've thought twice about giving this package for Carl Crawford, now we're falling over ourselves to give this package for Roberts? I'm wondering, what would the price be if Roberts didn't get caught in the steroids business?

People are letting their resistance break down. In another two weeks people will be saying "Felix Pie, Sean Gallagher, Geovany Soto, Rich Hill, Carlos Marmol, and a PTBNL who turns out to be Josh Vitters, well, it's a high price but this is BRIAN ROBERTS we're talking about."

I also don't like the message this sends - jerk us around for 3 months and then take us for everything we've got after jacking us bad in the Trachsel trade. We're in a cycle of just overpaying horridly through trades that has to stop.

I also don't think any prospective throw-ins make this trade any better. Jamie Walker? That just illustrates how low we sold on guys like Ohman, it wouldn't surprise me if Ohman put up better numbers than Walker this year. Sherrill's one excellent year in '07 doesn't mean anything more to me than the various one great years many lefties put up in their career.

This just looks awful to me.

Lets see folks who holds all the trump cards in this deal for "Roberts"!!! Its AM and he knows how badly Hendry and Piniella want this guy and he is going to ask for as much as he can.

Do you have any insider word on this? Nudge, nudge...

Sorry, but I just read what is being posted on all the "websites" whether it be NSBB, Cubs.com or OH. I wanna say that I thought it was stated in a Chicago paper months ago that Piniella had made a statement as to how much he likes Roberts. To be honest if you just saw the trade they completed with Seattle for Bedard for five players that the O's are going to ask for more since Roberts is Angelos favorite. ;)

And I hope Hendry doesn't give in like Seattle did. If he (Hendry) is obsessed with Roberts, this may be a problem.

Hendry has been at it for two months and hasn't given in, so I don't see why he would now.

If the deal is Marquis, Murton and Cedeno, count me in. It would be worth it to be out of under Marquis' contract. Problem is that won't be the deal. If Veal is involved, Jim should just walk away.

IMO...if the O's really want to do the right thing and rebuild, I see no reason why they would want Marquis.

Rebuilding or not they still have to try to win games. Marquis can eat innings and buy time for the real prospects that might need it. A complete overhaul makes sense from a fans perspective but teams rarely ever do it to such an extent that they don't have at least a few Vets around.

Someone said that Veal and Gallagher were our 2 best pitching prospects. Gallagher by virtue of being close is but the organization seems higher on Ceda and a few others. At this point we don't know if Veal will be pitching out of the pen or starting.

Well said! I've argued all along that Roberts is a marginal upgrade at 2B over DeRosa and to give up that much seems ridiculous. Maybe Hendry ought to talk to the Diamondbacks about Hudson, if for no other reason than leverage in the Oriole talks. Personally, I don't think Hendry would make the mentioned deal. Getting back Payton and Sherrill would help even out the deal somewhat. It might be okay to trade those four players if we're talking about Bedard or Santana, but not Roberts.

i think it's time for another GM to swoop in and save Hendry from himself (a la Kaz, Podsednik, etc.)

The Cubs won't walk away cause they need to "WIN" now and it seems that this has to be the year!!! The only way I see the "O's" even considering taking Marquis is if the Cubs are willing to pay most of his Salary. Why would the "O's" who are in the midst of trimming salary and taking players who will be in their control for the next 2/3 yrs take Marquis and pay his salary. Its going to be interesting to see how this all plays out in the next couple of weeks as the Bedard deal should be announced either today or tomm. I would say that if Roberts were to be dealt it would be quick but with the way the Bedard deal dragged out who knows ;)

I agree. It would be stupid of them to even consider taking Marquis. No GM wants Marquis. The only fool to give him 21mil was our very own.

I doubt that did you see the contract Carlos Silva just got? Crappy innings eaters cost 10 mill a year minimum in today's market. You're not gonna get a top level prospect for him but someone would take him.

What times does today's announcement that Bedard won't be traded until tomorrow at the earliest occur?

That happened yesterday between Peace21 and BigBird.

10:56am apparently:

According to the Baltimore Sun, as of late Wednesday afternoon Erik Bedard had yet to leave his home in Ontario in order to undergo a pre-trade physical in Seattle.

The newspaper now suggests that an official trade announcement may not come until Friday, but the timetable could change quickly once Bedard actually boards a flight.

With everything that has gone on with this trade and the fact that it has taken this long anybody wanna bet that something "pops up" with a players physical and the trade is called off....... ;)

If that's the case then why is he still here? Nobody wants Marquis.

Why is he still here? Because the Cubs aren't desperate to move him. They may not be in love with him, but they still won't trade him unless they get some type of value from him.

There have been several different reports that teams are interested in Marquis. They just haven't given a package that the Cubs are willing to take for their most costly and most dependable 4th/5th starter option. We may wish they would dump the contract of Marquis, but the Cubs have given no indication that they are willing to do that.
