According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals are not expected to offer arbitration to David Eckstein.

The deadline to do so is December 7 and the newspaper suggests that the Cardinals are interested in Miguel Tejada, Jack Wilson and Cesar Izturis as potential replacements for Eckstein. "Right now when you look at the shortstop market, there's not a lot of options," general John Mozeliak said. "If we find ourselves waiting too long, we could end up with nothing. As we go into this week, we want to make sure we're protected."

If they get Izturis, what would he do? .300 with 20 homers?

Do the O's have a 3rd baseman? They can deal Rolen plus prospects and cash to the O's for Tejada.

Why would Baltimore do that?? Unless you are talking about some fine prospects and a lot of money.

Just thinking of a way that this would work. If the O's need a 3rd baseman and Rolen is healthy, they would get better defense and around the same numbers while getting cash and a couple of good prospects to boot.

I'd rather have Izturis than Jack Wilson's hideous contract. :-&

08:$6.5M, 09:$7.25M, 10:$8.4M club option ($0.6M buyout) isn't hideous. It's not ideal, but it isn't hideous.

I have no doubt that Hendry has also inquired about Jack Wilson.

You hate us, don't you Hoops? That's the only reason I can see for telling us this information.

Reality is that he is probably better than our alternatives.

Our SS position is bad enough that Wilson would probably be a bad gamble but not a horrible one. At least he's had a couple years of good production for a SS. His defense is also better than Theriot's.

I'm not saying I would want to trade for him, but he almost certainly would be an upgrade and possibly a significant one.

I agree. If either the Cubs or Cards get him and he is the center piece of their offseason, then they are in trouble. If he is acquired and further moves are made then he could be a very solid pick up. He isn't going to be a difference maker, but he'll be around average offensively and slightly above defensively.

EJ,

What are you saying - I love you guys! And, to be clear: I'm not saying I know Hendry has inquired about him rather I'm saying I suspect Hendry has inquired about him. If memory serves, Hendry likes the guy. And if dough was not an issue, I'd certainly take his productivity over Ryan Theriot's. For grins, check out Wilson's stats in August and September.

Nothing can save Izturis. It doesn't matter what team he plays on, he will be terrible anywhere.

All anyone needs to know about Cesar Izturis is, at this point in his career, he is a better offensive player than he is a defender.

Jack Wilson's 2007 stats:

.296 .350 .440 with 12 Hrs and 56 rbi. If he were free the Cubs should take him. If the Pirates were willing to pay some of his contract, giddyup again.

Considering Theriot's line of .266 .326 .346 with 3 HRs and 45 rbi, Wilson would be a sizeable improvement.

I'm fairly certain the O's are pretty happy with Melvin Mora at 3rd, although he can play elsewhere and hits well enough that he doesn't kill you wherever he plays.

I beg to differ with you on the notion that the O's are "pretty happy." Mora is going to be earning about $17.2M over the next 2 seasons, and he's coming off back-to-back seasons where his OPS was less than .760. If they are pretty happy with him, then they're probably pretty happy with 5th place.

I'm shocked people here kind of like Jack Wilson.

He was solid last year, and solid in 04 (.308/.335/.459 with 11 HRs and 59 RBI), but other than that his career numbers are absolutely horrid. Other than 04 and 07 when he had an OPS+ of 104 and 105 respectively, he hasn't put up an OPS+ of above 77 in any of his five other seasons. He's absolutely terrible, and Ryan Theriot's 72 OPS+ last year is very comparable to the rest of Wilson's career. With that pretty awful contract, there is no need to even think about Jack Wilson, as I have no doubt Theriot could put up the same or better numbers for a fraction of the cost.

It should also be noted that I despise Ryan Theriot, and don't even think he should be anything more than the 25th man next year. That's how much I dislike the idea of Wilson at SS.

I'd swear he was a skinny average hitting kid when he came up, I wonder why the drop?

Mora will be 36 in February.
