Jayson Stark has an article on ESPN.com (Link) in which he discusses the price in players for some of the big names on the market.

The Cubs aren't mentioned in the dealing for Cabrera (Angels, Dodgers, White Sox, and Giants), but here's what he says on what the Marlins are looking for in return.

Well, here's the Marlins' asking price: Four players, none of them with more than three years of big league service, all with a similar profile to the young future superstars the Twins are asking for Santana.

And for those wondering about Tejeda....

"They are dying," says an official of one team that spoke with the Orioles, "to move that guy."

Then again, judging by the price, "dying" might not be the right word. Tejada has $26 million coming over the next two years, and the Orioles haven't exactly offered to eat $25 million of it. So they'd like the bidders to eat the money and give them two "quality" players back, according to clubs that talked with them.

After reading the article, I wonder if the Cubs have the players to be in the Cabrera sweepstakes, but I'd love to make a run for him.

Could a deal of Hill, Murton, Colvin, and Marmol be enough to get into the discussions?

The Key is Hendry finding a way to move any of (Dempster , Marquis, Ohman, Infante).

If the Pirates give you guys Alex Presley as the PTBNL in the Izturis trade, and then you included him with that group, perhaps it will be enough.

Let me just say that Miguel Cabrera plays 3rd base, and is the one 3rd baseman in all of baseball lasier than our own.

He played 3b last season, in his 723 games, he's played 100 in RF and 248 in LF. I don't think it's far-fetched to look at him as an option in the OF.

Hey, fake troll account strikes again.

Do you really believe that?

To make the deal better for the Cubs from a financial perspective maybe the Orioles would do Cedeno, Marquis and Ohman for Tejada. If they are "dying" to move him it allows them to do that while reducing their payroll and adding a back of the rotation starter. FWIW, Marquis would have to be an upgrade from Trachsel who they had in their rotation last year.

Barry...Rozner? Boneheaded Barry? You did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show?

Come on, no more of the Ramirez is lazy crap. That wore out its welcome long ago.

Another fine addition to the discourse, Mr. Rozner.

It's not 2002 anymore. Aramis isn't lazy.

I would love to have Cabrera in LF. The Winter meetings should be very interesting. I would love to see Hendry pursue some big and SMART trade ideas. Key word being SMART. Anything to keep him away from Kaz and his agent.

The Dodgers and Angels have the young guys to give the Fish want they want but are they willing to give them up? The Cubs might not mind as much and may have no problem parting with the young players that the Marlins may want. I wonder if Cabrera has a preference on what position he plays? I know he can play 3B or LF/RF but didn't he not like to playing in the outfield?

According to one of his quotes, he said he would play wherever his new team wanted him to play. I think it was one of Olnys blogs. If he could drop 20-25 lbs. I think he could be a good LF'er. I'm not sure how strong or accurate his arm is though. If we could get him and keep Pie in Center..... \:D/

Hill, Murton, Colvin and Marmol, would probably get it done. The Marlins get 3 players that fit the cheap pre-arbitration criteria and that will be upgrades over what they have in 2008 and get a potential star prospect. Sure the Angels could give up Adenhart, Wood, Mathis, and Rivera, but will they? Sure the Dodgers could give up Kemp, Kershaw, and Broxton, but will they? Will the Giants give up Lincecum?

That being said, I don't think the Cubs would give up that much, and I don't know that they should.

Well, he wouldn't be a LF with the Cubs. He would go to RF. And yes, his arm is good enough that he can play anywhere he wants.

Why did I say LF? Maybe I have turkey on my brain. Yes, RF is what I was thinking. If they give up Marmol, then Woody has to be re-signed. IMO

I think it would be easier for the Cubs to do the deal than it would be for the Dodgers or Angels. The Dodgers and Angels prospects rank higher than the ones the Cubs would be giving up. Hill is the best player in the deal and the Cubs would have to move to replace him somehow, but a line-up that includes Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Cabrera (and I'm not uncertain that I wouldn't want that to be the 1-4 in the line-up) would be very, very potent.

It would hurt, but I'd probably make the deal.

I'd probably half ass it on a broken ankle too.

Unless of course Pie was part of the deal. I'd love to see the Cubs get an impact bat like this and one that should be an impact for years to come.

Why would it be easier for the Cubs to make the deal than the Angels? The Angels would be giving up a sub OF and three prospects, in other words not affecting their current team. The Cubs would be giving up their #3 starter (with the potential to be #2), their current RF, their "lights out" late relief man, and one of their top OF prospects. That would leave 2 big holes in the pitching staff for the current team.

You apparently don't watch the games.

EDIT: And just so nobody thinks I'm serious, Rozner said something along those lines after somebody sent Rozner an email about calling Aramis lazy.
