Dayn Perry[/url]"]7. Francisco Cordero to the Cubs

This one kills two birds with one stone. The Cubs had a quality bullpen last season, but that was no thanks to closer Ryan Dempster, who gave up too many walks and too many runs. Signing Cordero not only gives the Cubs a huge upgrade at closer, but it also deprives their chief division rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers, of their best reliever.

I don't understand why everyone thinks we need to add to our bullpen. Re-sign Woody, and I think we're pretty much set in the bullpen.

Agreed. Dempster didn't pitch that badly. I'd take Cordero in a heartbeat, but our bullpen is the least of my worries at this point.

I give up fighting about the bullpen. It is what it is. I hope they don't lose Wood. He can negotiate with anyone as of today. Also hope Marmol is as good next year. Anything is better than (painfully) watching Dumpster coming into the game.

It seems that everybody is under the impression that Dempster was terrible and we need a closer. The truth is, though, Marmol or Wood (preferrably Kerry) would be fine in that role and just promote Wuertz.

Oh well. Hopefully Hendry doesn't agree with the general consesus on this one.

Yes, those THREE blown saves he had last year were horrible. Especially in comparison to his TWENTY EIGHT converted saves.

Dempster isn't that bad.

How many of those 28 did he come in with a 2 or more run lead and then give up a run (or two)?

He wasn't all that terrible. Take out a few atrocious outings and his ERA is much lower

Put me in the camp that doesn't think Dempster was really that bad. He was a LOT better than 2006, but if the Cubs could get Cordero for a reasonable price - it would be a good divisional move. I'd also like to see Woody stay.

5, 1 of those being a sole unearned run.

As evidenced by Todd Jones, closers cost way too much to be wasting money on fixing a problem that isn't that glaring. If Lou maximizes his bullpen leverage using the best pitchers in the more important spots, I have no problem bringing in Dempster to get 3 outs in the 9th with nobody on base. (I'd probably prefer to dump his salary to make room for Tejada while filling the closer spot internally)

Go ahead and sign Cordero. Kosuke, too. Wood, of course.

Move Marquis in the rumored deal for Winn.

Move Dempster to anyone who will take his entire salary.

Pitch Marshall and Gallagher in the rotation.

The thing about relief pitchers is that they are so volatile from year to year. I really do not want to see the Cubs invest a lot of resources into another relief pitcher. Cripes, every year you can pick up guys from the scrap heap, bring up prospects from your own system, and even look to international free agents for help. It's a cheaper way of dealing with any perceived bullpen problems.

Frankly, I think the Cubs have a handful of guys who could become good relievers next year in their system. This kind of a move is unnecessary.

If Todd Jones is getting $7M I shudder to think what Cordero will get. If a stinkin relief pitcher is our blockbuster acquisition of the offseason then we're doomed.

I don't think Ryan is that bad, but I also don't think he should be closing. More than anything, I want my closer to not walk people. Thus I think Howry might be the best option.

I don't understand why people are still talking about Dempster as a closer. Hendry and Lou have already said he's going into the rotation.

Shhhhhhhhh, let us have our denial.

If Woody is just going to be a middle reliever I don't see the need to sign him.

If you don't re-sign Wood with Dempster already going to the rotation makes the bullpen a little thin in quality arms. Suddenly you have a bullpen of Marmol, Howry, Wuertz, Eyre, Hart, Ohman?, and then still 1 more guy. That's a lot of question marks at the back of the bullpen.

At the same time, 5 mil for Wood is awfully steep.

Spending legit money beyond the top 3 guys in the pen is a waste. It's hard enough to get value when spending money on any bullpen guy. Spending big money to upgrade the 6th inning guy is like spending big money on a bench guy.

Rotoworld:

Francisco Cordero-R-Brewers Nov. 13 - 6:26 pm et

The Brewers made their initial offer to free agent Francisco Cordero on Monday.

It was previously reported that the Brewers and Cordero's agent had agreed not to negotiate until Cordero could talk money with other teams. However, the Brewers made their offer before their exclusive window closed at midnight. Cordero is likely to get a four-year deal worth in excess of $10 million per year.

Yikes. 4 years and $40 million for a reliever? Stay far away Hendry.
