Hendry apparently wants Wood back, possibly as closer, to free up Dempster for trade bait.

But he sounds a bit sketchy on Prior:

Meanwhile, a source indicated the Cubs would tender a 2008 contract to the surgically repaired Prior only if he is willing to give the team a club option for 2009. Hendry declined to comment, but it's believed he doesn't want to invest another year in Prior's recovery only to have him bolt as a free agent.

Stupid. Yea Jim would rather invest in crap like Jason Marquis, Neifi Perez, Steve freaking Trachsel, etc etc etc.. then a guy with talent. The sooner Hendrys ass leaves Chicago the better.

Anyone else completely baffled as to how Hendry still has a job? He's obviously completely overmatched as GM.

If that is truly Hendry's stance, I don't think it is unreasonable.

Don't take that as a vote of confidence in hendry as an overall GM, but I think most GM's would offer the same kind of deal in this instance.

Hendry has invested alot more money, and time in alot worse players to even justify using that sentence.

Hendry is baseball's worst GM, but I don't blame him for not bringing Prior back in 2008 without some team-controlled option for 2009.

Why is this so out of line? I'm sure other teams would want a option for 2009 also. He's not due back until the ASB, and even then you don't know what he'll give you.

I thought he was on schedule for spring training?

What has Prior brought back anytime recently in the continued investment made into him? Not even enough to match those 3 guys listed. I would ask for the same contract. If he doesn't want it, hit the door Mark. I am so tired of his crap, I don't know if I want him back even with that contract.

I'm curious on how much Wood would want and I thought he wanted to be a starter? I suppose if he's getting paid closer money that might help.

How much money do the Cubs have to offer Prior to keep him for another year? I hated the Miller signing because it was 1 Million+ and a roster spot down the toilet and I can definitely see why Hendry would want an extra year. IMO, Prior is going to try to get as much cash and as fast as he can once he's able too. I don't blame him for that and I don't blame Hendry for not spending/wasting money on him. Heck, If Prior is hurt all year which is probable, Hendry can't even trade him to at least get something for him and I doubt he's even a Type B Free Agent if he did go next year.

To be fair, we have no idea when he will be back. It can't be assumed that he'll be back for ST, but we obviously don't have any non-speculative information suggesting that he wn't be back until the ASB. The only information I recall coming out about Prior this year was that he was ahead of schedule, which sounds positive, but is too vague to base anything on.

I'd like Hendry to try to negotiate a team option for 2009. That makes sense for the team. But it would be better to keep him on next year without a 2009 option if the alternative is letting him go now, after paying him to rehab for most of two seasons, after which he finally got the surgery he needed all along. He's not guaranteed to be gone if he doesn't sign with an option for '09, anyway.

Resigning him is a risk, but considering his upside and the fact that he has finally had surgery, the Cubs should be able to spare a bit of payroll to take one last crack at it.

I think this is a difficult situation. If Prior doesn't want to accept the 20% pay cut of (does anyone know what his salary is?) he can refuse. Isn't that a lot of money to spend on a guy that won't pitch for 2008? I'm guessing 3.75 or so.

Doesn't make it right if everyone else would do it either.

I think Sarcastic is right.

Actually, he can't "refuse", but he can go to an arbitration hearing.

I think it would be a boneheaded move for the Cubs to let Prior rehab for most of 4 seasons, finally find enough wrong with him to have a surgery and then let a player with his talent go before we figure out what he has got.

You're right. That could get nasty but I'm sure they would have made a move before that. Could the Cubs just flat out release him too?

Isn't it possible that he won't pitch in 2008? I think it's quite possible.
