I haven't had time to really look, but is there anyone among the Rule 5 eligibles that might work? Worth a look, in any event.

I don't think so. I think we have in house candidates that might be better. Kroeger, Patterson and Fuld all hit lefty and should be slated for AAA.

I really think Matsui would have worked out ok and I like that he takes a fair amount of pitches. If Hendry wakes up from his slumber and gets an impact bat in right I'll be satisfied with what the Cubs have.

The only impact bat that I see that meets the Cubs requirements outside of Fukudome is Milton Bradley.

Geoff Jenkins is probably next in line, but I think I'd rather see them grab Jose Guillen over Jenkins, but they won't do that.

Free agent wise you're right. I think Hendry might pull an interesting trade for a left bat if Fukedome doesn't sign. I would have loved Bradley if he didn't have the knee problem until July or so. Jenkins/Burnitz they seem the same to me and I agree Gullen would be better.....did he have steroid problems?

Or maybe they can get Jones from Detroit for Hill and Veal!

Possibly realistic trade targets:

Hamilton

Dunn

Griffey

Ibanez

Church

Scott

Drew

Garrett Anderson

Ethier

McLouth

Kubel

FAs:

Green

Lofton

Jenkins

Bradley

Ohh yeah, and Barry Bonds.

Hmmm...you've got me thinking. I wonder if the Red Sox would be interested in Prior? I'd like to see a nice blockbuster with Prior and others sent to the Red Sox for Drew and others.

Great news on not signing Matsui. Now I know how the British must have felt at the end of WWII when they didn't sign Matsui to play 2nd base.

The British were involved in WWII?

I'd love to see Kroeger do at AAA what he did at AA last year

Sign Bonds to play left. Spell/Platoon Bonds with Murton. Sign Fukudome to play center. Move Soriano to right. Trade Pie+Marshall+B prospect for Tejada.

Is Matsui to the Astros official yet? Because I seem to remember just a couple of weeks ago Yorvit Torrealba was all but signed, sealed and delivered to the NY Mets according to reports. Since then, Torrealba has re-upped with the Rockies and the Mets just traded for Brian Schneider.

That's some serious money you're spending between Bonds, Tejada and Fukudome. 30m at least.

I know. :) I wasn't really being serious.

Barring some unforeseen developments, the Astros will beat out the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies to sign free-agent second baseman Kazuo Matsui, a person with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed on Thursday night.

Does the bolded statement above from Houston and the Cubs GM's love of long term deals scare anyone else?

Nah, I think they are just protecting themselves after last year's debacle with Garland and the Sox for Tavares and others (that trade was reported in Houston as a done deal only to be halted moments before a press conference).

This is the closest I could find:

I'm not sure why this is a good thing, Lou wants a left-handed hitting middle infielder with speed and now with KazMat off the list that means they will be looking at guys like Felipe Lopez and Cristian Guzman.... :-&

Sorry I'm late to this party. I have an answer to this riddle, though.

Eric Patterson.

Heck of a lineup, though:

Soriano

Fukudome

Lee

Bonds

Ramirez

Tejada

DeRosa

Soto

Fontenot actually put up good numbers last year vs. RHP.

I don't think they're looking for a LF.
