Why did Ichiro do it? Was he just so widely known as Ichiro, like a Cher or Madonna type thing, that he decided to go with that instead of Suzuki?

Per his Wikipedia entry, "it was during the 1994 season that he began to use his given name, "Ichiro" instead of his surname, "Suzuki" on the back of his uniform. Suzuki is the second most common surname in Japan, and his manager introduced the idea as a publicity stunt to help create a new image for what had been a relatively weak team, as well as a way to distinguish their rising star. Initially, Ichiro disliked the practice and was embarrassed by it, but "Ichiro" was a household name by the end of the season and he was flooded with endorsement offers."

Fukudome seems to be Hendrys guy this offseason. Hendry targeted Soranio last offseason and got it done quickly expect the same with Fukudome.

Furcal?

Hendry wanted him or Pierre and wound up with one. Last season he said he would get Soriano and he did. If he wants Fukudome just as bad, I can only hope he would be able to get it done.

I would guess. And this is just me guessing here. That since Hendry got rid of Jones, he either already has a handshake (or bow), or is extremely confident he has Fukudome pretty much signed at this point (per talks with him I suppose).

ichiro, kosuke...who cares? for 12+ years the Bulls announcers called Jordan "Michael" about 99% of the time during broadcasts. it's just a name

Call him whatever you want. It didn't say Michael on the back of his jersey.

I can't wait for when a broadcaster tries pronouncing his last name and slips up on air.

alas, Joe Carter is no longer with us

maybe the cubs can make it to the playoffs and get dick stockton to broadcast another game. that would definitely be interesting.

After hearing the disaster that was him calling the NLDS, yes, that would be a riot.

After Chip Caray called HOF RHP Pud Galvin "Puhd" (rhymes with "mud") instead of "Pood" (rhymes with "good"), I'll be anxiously awaiting the Atlanta broadcasts of Cubs-Braves games, should the Cubs manage to sign Kosuke.

I don't think its necessarily that close. I think Fukudome is his first option and there have been talks, but I think Hendry sees the market for the type of OF's he is looking for and between Fukudome, Guillen, Cameron, etc he is confident in getting one of them.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but is Fukudome a CF? I just don't see the love for him as a corner OF. If he is I'd package Pie, Murton and a slew of young pitchers for Cabrera and plug Theriot and Infante at SS.

I believe Hendry's quote was something like, "He could play all three outfield positions for any major league team."

I imagine he'd be a RF with the Cubs, if he signed, because Hendry seems pretty adament about giving Pie CF.

Then again, Soriano was slated to play all 3 spots at one point last year.

For the three hundred and thirtieth time, yes he can be more than passable in center, although he played right this year for Chunichi.

I suppose, if you want it to be.

Again, thanks for the info.

This might the article that mentions Ichiro as a comparison that you guy are talking about, but they also say that he's ready to come to the US:

But Hendry's primary target appears to be Japanese free agent Kosuke Fukudome, who declared for Japanese free agency Monday.

"The desire for me to know what other teams think of me has gotten stronger," Fukudome said, making no mention of his desire to play in the major leagues.

Fukudome, 30, already knows what the Cubs think of him, though Hendry wouldn't discuss his interest.

"To my knowledge, he has not said specifically that he's ready to come to the States," Hendry said.

Fukudome is more than ready, sources say, and believes he can become the next Ichiro Suzuki.

What if we got Miguel Cabrera instead? Then would you cry?

If we get Miguel Cabrera, I'll need a new pair of pants.

and the wife will need to use crutches for a week.
