I haven't really "watched" an NBA game in a long time, but I watched the NO/PHX game and I must say there didn't appear to be a smidgen of defense in that game. The college game and the pro game are just so different. It seems like the disparity between college and pros, specifically the way the game looks and is played, is biggest in basketball than any of the other major sports.

Think about the roster size of a basketball team compared to a baseball or especially a football team and it will make sense.

Clearly the NBA has the most physical freaks per team of any sport because of the roster size, but I'm talking about the way the game is actually played. Whenever a player went for a fast layup in the game I watched, the defenders would just get out of the way and let them have it.

College is a shorter game (40 minutes vs. 48), with a longer shot clock (35 vs. 24) which can slow down the game a lot more in college than in the pros. Additionally, pretty much any type of defense is allowed in college whereas in the pros they only recently allowed zones and even those are pretty restricted. There's no defensive 3-second or illegal defense calls in college like there is in the NBA. Also, because the players in the pros are so good, full court presses are virtually never used outside of the end of the game when a team is down by a few points and looking for a steal.

Great post. Thanks. I had no idea about some of those rules concerning schemes and stuff since I follow the NBA about as much as the MLS.

I would argue as well that the level of defense varies wildly in the NBA. Some teams play run and gun (and Phoenix is the biggest example of this, so watching one of their games I can understand why you don't think there's any defense). Some teams play a very aggressive halfcourt defense though. That's why when the NBA Finals have come up with matchups like Detroit-San Antonio, people have called it boring because it traditionally has been a defense first, grind it out matchup.

The biggest example of modern defense I can show you is the Indiana-Detroit Eastern Conference Finals 3-4 years ago. They played 6 games, and the motto was whoever made it to 75 first won. They were both talented offensive teams as well, but the defense was just so stifling it didn't matter.

I would agree that the Pheonix model is getting more support from teams, even though it hasn't proven very successful in winning a championship for any of the teams who run it.

I'll take a little bith of both (reminisces the MJ Dynasty days from the 1990s).

Who actually wants to watch a super defensive, fundamental matchup anyway?

I don't want And 1 or whatever, but give me the Suns or Lakers over the Spurs or Pistons any day.

lol, is this even considered basketball?

It's basketball, just different than the pro game. After Alston crossed over and became afairly successful NBA player, they kind of earned more cred, imo. I think it has become what the globetrotters were, a nice alternative to structured basketball.

mostly because they think they can dribble their way through five defenders or make over the head no-look passes. they either end up hitting you in the balls or missing their target by ten feet.

You can always pick them out ahead of time, because they'll be wearing wrist bands around their biceps

I love playing them. I hate when I get stuck on their team.

Wow, New Orleans is up 31-10 on Utah in the first quarter on the heels of a 21-0 run.

Sounds like Kirk has really played his way out of the lineup. Bummer, since I like him, but hopefully the team will be better. I'm still not sold on Gordon as a ball-handler or a defender, but maybe his offense offsets that. Seems like Kirk's D has declined this year, too.

Hinrich might just need a change of scenery.

Jazz vs. Hornets + Hubie Brown= aboutt as good as it gets in terms of the NBA for me.

It would have been nice if the game had been a little closer, but Williams and Paul may be my favorite two NBA players.
