The Brewers have told Geoff Jenkins that they won't exercise his $9 million option for 2008.

An official announcement should come soon. The Brewers will likely look to free agency for an outfielder. They may sign a one-year replacement for Jenkins to give Matt LaPorta some additional time to develop, but perhaps the better choice would be to sign a quality center fielder and do something different with Bill Hall.

I thought they would actually pick up Jenkins' option. Don't have anything else there. Of course, they will have money to spend.

I don't see why they would pick up that option. Milwaukee has all kinds of cheaper options to stick in their outfield that make WAY less than Jenkins.

Tony Gwynn Jr., Corey Hart, Bill Hall, Gabe Gross, Kevin Mench, Joe Dillon, Matt LaPorta and Laynce Nix are plenty of options to fill the void.

I'm curious whether they'd like to go with Gwynn in CF and lead him off to move Weeks in to the 2nd spot in the order. Hall and Hart play the corners.

I think they'll move Braun to left, Hall to 3B and Hart to CF, Gross to RF. Or at least something along those lines with Braun to left and Hall to 3B.

They took Braun out for a defensive replacement nearly every game, only called him up in May and STILL he was the worst defensive player in the game by a good margin.

I think Jenkins would be a hell of a bat off the bench. I don't know if he would agree to that though.

He wouldn't have to worry about that, assuming Murton is still penciled in to an everyday slot on opening day. It'd be Murton doing most of the sitting.

Hart and Hall are already starters. Mench and Nix both stink. LaPorta's probably not ready yet. Dillon and Gross are journeymen who don't have much upside. I don't think Gwynn Jr is anything special either. I don't think he's any better of an option than Dillon or Gross.

Just a hunch, but I think the Brewers like the speed combination at the top of the order that Gwynn and Weeks would provide. It looked like Gwynn did a pretty good job of filling in when Hall was hurt. When Gwynn played more regularly (and granted, it's still a pretty small sample size), he provided a .350+ OBP. If they could get that (and OBP is definitely a major problem with the Brewers ballclub, they'd have some pretty good table setters for Braun, Fielder and Hart.

Gwynn

Weeks

Braun

Fielder

Hart

I expect Hendry and especially Lou will view Jenkins as a good replacement for Floyd. If Floyd leaves I'd be very surprised if the Cubs don't show some interest in Jenkins.

I think it will be between him and Green as possible candidates to fill a L/R platoon in RF.

Probably true, but what should really happen is Murton leaves. He's more valuable as trade bait than as the RH half of a platoon. There's no way Lou wants him as his everyday RF, so that's not even worth discussing.

What about Luke Scott? Reports are that the Astros are going after a CF to move Pence to RF.

Scott would be a great addition either as a regular or platoon with Murton.

Trade Marshall for Scott.

Trade Hill, Pie, Murton, and a couple of pieces parts for Santana.

Jenkins just looked last year like a guy at that stage in his career where he was seriously sacrificing his ability to get on base in order to maintain his power numbers.

No thanks.

Granted, that profile fits nearly every hendry signing for the past 4+ years...so...welcome aboard, Geoff!

Only part of the profile he doesn't fit is that he strikes out a lot, but so did Burnitz. Hendry excused that by saying Burnitz didn't strike out at the wrong times, i.e. he was clutch. In 2007 Jenkins had a .866 OPS with RISP so Hendry might think he's clutchy too. All things considered I can't see Jimbo not being at least somewhat interested in him.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres are likely to make an offer to Geoff Jenkins.

It might not be for the money Jenkins wants, and if it's a one-year deal, playing in Petco would make it more difficult for Jenkins to pile up numbers for when he's back on the market next winter. Still, Jenkins' agent likes the possibility. "It wouldn't be too tough a sell for Geoff to slide in nicely there," said Damon Lapa.
