i love dumb student athletes

I don't know that I'd say they are dumb. The AD/school is dumb if they allow themselves to be held hostage by 18-22 year olds when it's clearly not in their best interest.

okay, I think they're dumb for doing what they're doing, but the "stupid" tag will quickly transfer to the AD if their little walkout actually works

I feel bad for IU fans. They don't deserve this mess. At some point Kelvin Sampson needs to think about the kids and tell them to play out the year. Especially since he made a point at the MSU game talking about how this is all about the kids anyways.

If Sampson doesn't convince the players to continue playing I will lose all respect for him. No way the players should give up this season for any coach. IU still has a good chance to win the Big Ten and some games in the tournament. This isn't the summer; it's near the end of the season.

I would agree with this, although it hasn't been the IU way recently. When Knight left and the players threatened to leave, Knight encouraged every player to transfer. When Davis left, he encouraged players to transfer. Hopefully Sampson doesn't make it 3 for 3.

If you haven't lost all respect for Kelvin yet, I doubt anything he can do will cause you to.

Letting Davis finish out the season while he actively recruited the players was another in a long line of moronic decisions by IU.

Not saying it was right for Davis or Knight to do it(it wasn't) but they had better justifications than Sampson.(Though I guess you could trace some sort of somewhat weak parallel between Knight and Sampson being removed for non-basketball reasons, though being in that sentence would surely sicken Knight)

OT somewhat, where's Knightlife in Lubbock been? I don't recall him being banned or anything.

You know what I meant. I think I've been by far his biggest critic on here among IU fans.

Didn't mean anything personal, just meant he is about as low as can get ethically. There isn't much he can do short of admiting his transgressions and apologize. Sorry if I came across as trying to rip you.

For college coaches, I think that honor can be reserved for Dave Bliss.

I actually think the Knight and Sampson situations are very comparable. Both did things that are magnified because of IU's fanbase. Both had very legitimate reasons to be fired but weren't and were given other punishments instead. Both of them then got fired with not much additional added.

The biggest two differences are that Knight's possible problems were physical (going after players and assistants and possible assult) while Sampson's problems are with cheating, and that Sampson's firing occured during the season while Knight's didn't.

For both, I feel like they deserved to be fired but the way it was went about was very, very badly done.

Yeah Bliss has his own wing in the hall of shame. Edited by illiniguy

No worries. I don't like his ethics, nor did I want him hired. However, his teams played hard, he generally said the right things and the players truly like him. It wasn't all bad by any means. If he was ethical, he'd be a great fit at IU. But he's not, which worries me about the players boycotting. If he leaves quietly and the players stay and play hard for Dakich (without Sampson influencing otherwise), I won't truly revile Sampson. I'll just try to forget he was ever here.

Agreed. The situations are so similar. Let's hope this time they don't cave to player pressure and hire the wrong assistant as interim. I had, and still have, high hopes for President McRobbie, but this, as per usual at IU, has been handled very poorly.

Brian Randle may be done for the season. Sad ending if true. He'll be successful in the real world, but it's a shame he couldn't stay healthy in his 5 years in Champaign.

This IU thing is getting loonier by the minute. Does that mean McCallum wasn't at practice. Is he trying to sell himself as the interim coach? Is he Sampson's guy, and is Sampson leading the kids to push for McCallum? Just a total mess.

Kelvin Sampson will meet with his team tonight and encourage them to play in Saturday's game at Northwestern regardless of his situation, a person close to the team said today.

How can you play half of them now after they skipped practice?

Good. Still, this whole thing has been a circus.

Dakich, McCallum.....I don't care as long as an open coaching search happens once the season ends. Wrap up the terms of the buyout for Sampson tonight and move on with life starting tomorrow. The kids that missed practice today should not start tomorrow. Make them come off the bench or something.

Sampscum resigns. He will be paid a $750,000 buyout, $550,000 paid by an anonymous donor and $200,000 by the university. In return, he agrees not to pursue any wrongful termination suit. Dakich is now interim coach; McCallum has been promoted to assistant head coach (some of the details I mentioned come from an espn.com article rather than the article I linked to). Sampson is reportedly meeting with the players tonight and urging them to continue to play.

Scott Skiles as new IU head coach? I always thought he would be a better college coach than NBA coach.

Why does an anonymous donor have to pay half a million? Why wouldn't the university pay?

It's pretty common for boosters of a large program to donate large amounts of money just to pay a buyout of a coach they don't like.

But wouldn't IU buy him out regardless of the booster? But if the booster knows that something might be happening with Samson and he offers half a million, it is hard to turn that down. I just didn't know that boosters could be that direct with the money in that it can go directly where they want it.
