Sorry if this has been posted already but what can I say? I'm bored and I can't wait till Spring Training. I did find this interesting however. Apparently Tori Hunter would most like to play for the Nationals or Braves because of the large African American populations in those cities. It appears that Hunter would like to take an active role in the Black community. Good for him. I think that's great. Chicago certainly has a the large African American community and Jaque Jones is his buddy...but I don't think the Cubs will be interested. What y'all think?

I'd agree that Torii's not really the plate discipline guy that most people might want. He does bring power to the table, however--30 HRs or so the last two years. He carried the Twins for the first half of '07 (and my son's favorite player). The other issue is that he hates artificial turf. Not sure that would matter at Wrigley.

FWIW, I live in the most predominantly African American section of town and I've never heard of Torii over here for anything. It's great if he wants to be a leader, but it hasn't really happened here.

Most big market cities have a large African American population, so I don't understand him mentioning only Atlanta and Washington.

Because the black population in Atl and DC is around 60% compared to ~30 in Chicago, 25 in NYC, 11 in LA, etc.

I think he brings power, defense, and leadership, but I also think he's going to get overpaid. I think he'd be a great fit (I know most on this board don't).

I really don't remember anything with him being any more or less active than any other players in the community.

As memory serves me, he's heavily involved in the various programs to increase baseball exposure to young African Americans in the US.

Dusty Baker:

Baseball needs more players to handle the heat, what with global warming increasing. Sign him $100mil for 5 years.

I'd have questions about defense over the life of the contract he's likely to receive, and I definitely think he'd be overpaid. Given the in-house options at this point for CF (Pie, Colvin), it doesn't seem like a place where the Cubs need to spend a lot of money. Investing in shortstop or RF would address a more glaring need, imo.

Does anyone really think Torii will get signed for 5+ years? I'd love to see him play center or right for the Reds and block Josh Hamilton and Jay Bruce. (And pesky Cub-killing Norris Hopper.)

Honestly, though, I don't think even Krivsky is that dumb, regardless of what Dusty might contribute to the conversation. I know some here will disagree.

Not to derail the thread, but did anybody else see Jay Bruce at the futures game earlier this year? Kid looks better than Longoria, and scares the crap outta me.

Five years seems very real to me--he'd be 37 when that's done. I could see 6-7, depending on the bidding. He's had some leg issues, but with natural turf, I could see him lasting that long. At this point, I can't imagine why someone wouldn't sign him for CF, since that's where his numbers have the most value. He's nothing special as a corner OF, though he could move over if needed as time goes on.

I didn't know he was only 32

I'd bet he'd probably get 6 years at $85 mill, which is way too much. It would be interesting to see if a new playing surface would help him maintain his defense out in center over those year, however.

I think and hope we stay away from him.

Stay away.

His numbers besides this year aren't any better than Jock's.

Hunter being a free agent isn't as bad as it would have been if MacPhail was still with the Cubs. Maybe the O's will sign him.

When I mentioned his defense, I see him as our RF. He can still play CF, but I'd rather have Pie there and upgrade RF and SS as others have mentioned.

He always has been and always will be much better than Jacque.

5 years is too long though.

I don't think he is nearly as valuable in our RF. I think that if you saw him play our RF, you would likely conclude that Murton really isn't terrible there. There is no reason to sign him unless it is to fill a defensive CF hole. Obviously, Pie fills that and then some. Torii's offense is not good enough to allow him to play right field. Only when both play RF is the comparison to Jacque Jones fair; in CF there is really no comparison.
