If the Cubs offer Prior arbitration they must offer at least $2.9 million. I have been thinking that was too much for Hendry given questions about Prior's availability. I don't know what to make of this. If this means Hendry offers Prior arbitration on the theory that something might stick to the wall, fine. But $4.75 million for Trachsel? It's incomprehensible.

HAhahhahaa....

4.75 million of one year of Traschel? Hell, we should should pay that much to get him off the team!

Per Rosenthal from Foxsports.com the Cubs are going to pick up the options.

Ward is a no-brainer but Trachsel WTF!?

Rotoworld:

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal expects the Cubs to exercise their options on Steve Trachsel and Daryle Ward for 2008.

Ward, owed $1.2 million next year, figured to have his picked up. However, it's a surprise that they'd want anything more to do with Trachsel, who was 1-3 with an 8.15 ERA after being picked up from the Orioles. They may figure he'd have some trade value at $4.75 million for 2008, but we're guessing they're wrong.

Expects? I'm sure he's wrong here.

I hope so. I'm trying to refrain from freaking out until/unless it actually happens (re: Trachsel, not Ward).

This is exactly how you put together a mediocre (or worse) team with a $100+ payroll.

I'll refrain from going insane until I see official word, simply because there is no possible way the Cubs could be dumb enough to do this.

Ward's option is a no-brainer. I know it'll never happen but boy would I love to see him reproduce his 2007.

It's not going to happen. All because a writer expects it to happen doesn't mean it's going to happen.

Hey, I have an idea, let's all overreact

I have not yet begun to overreact. If this is proven true, then I will show you overreaction.

Really? They couldn't?

Alfonseca, Perez, Blanco, Rusch

There's plenty of reason to think they, or more specifically Jim Hendry, would be this stupid.

Trachsel's option is for like twice as much as those guys'. Hendry wasn't dumb enough to keep Izturis at that rate (I think his option was 4.15M or something for 08) and I can't believe he'll be dumb enough to keep Trachsel.

There's no way in hell this can possibly be true. Because if it is, we're boned this offseason. 4.75m for players like this is exactly why we middle about in mediocrity.

Don't use Izturis as an example. Only if Izturis was still on the team would it be a relevant example. Credit Lou for this one.

I love all the raging on a blurb by Ken Rosenthal on Rotoworld. Let's all take a deep breathe and relax. All because Rosenthal thinks it'll happen doesn't mean it will.

I wonder how well Lou would go along with Trachsel coming back. There's a distinct reason Lou quit using Trachsel after a few bad starts and I have a feeling Lou won't fell comfortable with Steve for a full season.

Hendry may well want him back, but I have to think Lou would be against it and, thus, overrule the decision.

FYI, Ken Rosenthal isn't just "some writer". I can't remember the last time he was wrong and pretty much all season long hes scooped everybody to every story. I pray to Len hes wrong, but Ken deserves all the credibility in the world.

Well, I guess he's due then. :)

Didn't one of his articles about Aramis going to free agency spark the huge ledge jumping thread this past offseason.... while he did technically become a free agent, it was only for an hour or two.

Not trying to take any credibility away from him, but he's been known to mislead us before so just holding out hope.

I might be wrong but I think Alfonseca got at least $4 M for 2003, if not more. I can't find it right now...Google fails me yet again.

According to Cot's, Ward has the right to void his option and become a free agent.

"I'm sorry, Daryle. I know you want to have 2009 guaranteed for you, but I've decided to exercise Trachsel's option instead." - Baseball's worst GM

That would really suck.
