If the Cubs can beat Webb, I guarantee they'll win the series.

If they get to a Game 5 back in Arizona where they'll have to face Webb again, they'll lose the series. I don't think they'd stand a chance in Game 5 against a well-rested Webb.

If the series lasts 3 or 4 games I think the Cubs take it.

This is pretty much the conclusion I've reached as well.

I haven't read all of this thread, but how have we faired against Webb this year?

Being the Cubs like to swing at the first pitch, we should do OK against him -- at least that's my thinking.

i don't know if thisd has been posted or not, but didn't owings set a georgia high school record for home runs?

Yep, and he was right there for the national record as well. Which I believe is now Jeff Clement's, you can partially thank his amazing HS field for that.

which one? clement's or owings's?

Clement's, if (I was LH'ed) I could hit 5-10 HRs there when I was in HS. Marshalltown, Iowa has the best HS field I've seen by far, but it is made to give up some HRs.

we beat him, but he went 7 innings, giving up 5 hits, a walk, 3 runs (2 earned), and 4 Ks

we tacked on 3 more off Lyon in the 8th and won 6-2

that was without D Lee.

Don't know if this was posted, but here is Yahoo's take on the series:

Actually not really the garbage I expected.

Why the Cubs should win: Because they're the more talented team. Because a lineup that includes Soriano, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez should outhit the Diamondbacks. Because manager Lou Piniella has won a World Series while Arizona's Bob Melvin is in his first postseason. Most of all, because, dammit, Chicago can only take so much.

Actually, the Cubs played without Lee and Floyd. Angel Pagan was the starting RF. The Cubs LHs had good days vs. Webb. Fontenot walked, singled, stole 2 bases, and scored twice against Webb. Jones had 2 RBI singles. Pagan went 1-3 also.

I would run early and often on Webb. If Soriano and Theriot get on, they should go. If Lee and Jones can get good jumps, they should be on the move too. That's pretty much how you beat Webb. Not gonna hit a bunch of HRs or gappers against him, unless he is severely off his game. Gotta take extra bases and single him to death back up the middle.

I don't know what's crazier, the fact that either the Rockies, Cubs, Phillies or Diamondbacks will represent the NL in the World Series, or that of all the NL teams, the Cubs most are the most recent participant in the playoffs and probably collectively have the most postseason experience

Couldn't agree more. And if they do lose with him, I hope they still show some fight instead of just bending over in the next games

They'll need to hang close and get into the BPs. That means Z needs to pitch very well, and we'll probably need to squeeze a run or two off Webb.

It's going to be pretty tough. But realistically we only *need* to win 1 game in AZ, so all is not lost if we lose tomorrow.

I'm not sure we can snag one in Chicago, so the 2 at home are almost a must for me. Livo has pitched like trash lately and Owings will be pitching in front of a rowdy Chicago crowd, I'd like to see if he can handle that.

technically, we *need* to win 3 games regardless of the city they're played in. why does everyone think the Cubs are a lock to win both home games?

Because Twinkie lover, Livan and inconsistent Owings will be on the hill in both.

If we beat Webb, we win the series. If we lose tomorrow, I give the advantage to D-backs. I don't want to have to face him in game 5

Even Lou hasn't done much of it, I'd like to see some hitting and running vs Webb. Its pretty difficult to elevate the ball, might as well try to use the gb's to your advantage.

If we beat Webb, we win the series. If we lose tomorrow, anything can happen.

no. if we beat webb, we have a better chance at winning the series.

The thing that scares me is that I read somewhere that the DBacks are 28-17 against lefties this year. Ted Lilly and Rich Hill pitch games 2-3, Zambrano is neutralized with Webb. It could be a very tough series if we come out flat in game 1.

The cubs usually play down to crappy starting pitching
