I know there have been some threads similar to this topic, but I want to make one thread to put official matchups the rest of the year. Everything until Monday is listed on ESPN's pitching probables page. Everything after is my speculation. If you learn of an update, please reply and I'll change it. Note that I am about 90% sure that the Cubs and Brewers rotations are correct, the opponents might have some changes.

Piniella has already said that he intends to go Z, Hill, and Lilly (in that order) in the final series and that they don't know who is pitching the last game in Florida. So piecing all that together, I'm fairly certain that they're planning on going this way:

I do not see one single pitching matchup, in which we clearly are at a disadvantage. There are some in which it is about even, but the closest we come to being at a disadvantage, is either Zambrano vs. Harang (twice), or Lilly vs. Willis (I still think we have the advantage).

Thanks, I edited it to reflect that.

Kinda sucks that Z is almost neutralized in his last 3 starts by Harrang (twice) and Gorzelanney.

Looking at the pitching matchups, I think the best case scenario is going 8-3 and the worst case is going 5-6

I think we are at a disadvantage today with Z going on 3 days rest (ask Jake Peavy a couple weeks back how that goes) against Harrang today. I also think we are neutral with Z vs. Gorzelanney (tough lefty).

Bush vs Young is the only pitching matchup that scares me in that Brewers list. Peavy of course is always scary but I'm counting on him not needing to go.

The whole @atl series is scary too just because of how rotten the Brewers have played on the road in general.

Should be a fun last 2 weeks.

Well time to help your worries

Chris Young Splits:

Home - 4-2 1.47 ERA 0.95 WHIP in 12 starts

Away - 5-5 4.11 ERA 1.17 WHIP in 15 starts

ERAs by month:

April - 4.33

May - 1.13

June - 1.52

July - 0.41

August - 5.48

September - 6.19

Dave Bush has been terrible lately. After struggling in July and August, the Brewers rotation save Bush has been great. Sheets has been good post-injury besides his last start, Gallardo had a period of ineffectiveness after teams got a book on him, but hes figured it out and has 21 straight scoreless innings currently. Suppan has stepped up and become a reliable middle of the rotation pitcher finally. And replacing Vargas with Villenueva has really helped stabilize the rotation.

I didn't realize the Brewers pitching staff was coasting along like that. Wish I could be that confident about the Cubs staff.

Ender, what's the general feeling on Villanueva since coming back. Is anything different in the way he's pitching or is it just that he's not throwing 4 innings every day now?

Actually I think his bad spell was more flukey than anything. He has a .709 OPS against and 85 K's in 94.2 IP as a RP but a 4.56 ERA, something just doesn't add up in there.

He has looked very good since coming back as a starter and has a career 3.02 ERA as a starter now which is a bit flukey too, he probably deserves a high 3.00 ERA with his stats.

The one matchup that might seem odd saying it is even is Villanueva vs Hudson but Hudson has been over a 4.00 ERA pitcher since mid May. He was absolutely dominating early in the year but he wasn't able to maintain it.

Well plenty of the games could go either way. Bush vs Young makes me think we lost the game before we even play it though the stats posted above do make me feel a little better about it.

I wouldn't count on that at all. Philly is making a run, and the WC is getting really tight. The Pads may have to fight for it.

Plus they are only 1 game behind Arizona - and have the same number of losses - in the race for the NL West.

yes but I'm a Brewer fan so I'm still counting on it! My money is on either the last game not making a difference for the Padres or the Central already being won by someone by that game.

This goes back to a thread I started about Lilly being the ace of the Cubs this year. If the 3 games the Cubs are most likely to lose are Zambrano against the other team's ace, is he really the "great" pitcher all of us make him out to be?

Oh no, now the Pirates are purposely ordering their rotation in order to try to beat the Cubs:

Zach Duke, who came off the disabled list earlier this month (elbow tendinits) and pitched three innings of relief last weekend in Houston, will start for the Pirates on Saturday in Chicago against the Cubs.

That will give the Pirates three left-handers starting against the Cubs at Wrigley, with Paul Maholm starting Friday and Tom Gorzelanny on Sunday.

"We were looking to put left-handerd starters against the Cubs," said Pirates manager Jim Tracy.

Hey, kudos to them. If I was a manager and was playing a team as laughably bad as the Cubs, I'd do whatever I could to stack the decks. Fie on the Cubs for being so easily stymied.

Just have to find a way to win. Besides, this will be Duke's first start off the DL correct?

I'm predicting some long bombs from Soriano, Lee, AND Ramirez vs. all those lefties.

Dude, was it really needed to quote the 1st post, when you were the second post? Yes I realize I'm making it worse by quoting this too.

I edited the first post for the changes to the rotations of the Pirates, Brewers, Marlins and Cardinals based on news and what ESPN.com has up for pitching probables. It looks a bit different than what I had yesterday.

Bring it. Wil Carroll had a blurb this week that Duke's velocity is down *significantly* since coming back from his injury. The Cubs should light him up like a pinball machine.

Gorzelanny, on the other hand....

Soft-tossing lefty = Cobs suckfest.
