Even cooler is the guy who caught the ball was from Texas, and just in town for some convention. Well Thome offered him a gift pack which consisted of Cubs/Sox tickets and the guy donated them to the Jim Thome Foundation.

I often wonder how the Cubs would have been if they had just signed him and not gone through with the Choi experiment.

Defensively alot worse, and not that much better offensively. Its hard telling how much Thome would have been healthy had he had to play the field 140 times. Hes been banged up quite a bit just Dh'ing.

good for him, i've always pulled for him, despite him and the cubs not agreeing on a deal a few years back. congrats.

Pretty cool that it came in a walk-off too. He's definitely the type you root for. Seems like a really good guy.

It's fitting that as the Dugout goes off into the sunset, Thome has one of his last blazes of glory.

Like others here, I can't stand the Sox but Thome is and always has been a good guy. A genuinely great hitter, and this was a pretty amazing 500th home run. Very cool to win it with a walkoff and hit that milestone with the same HR.

Jim Thome has always been one of my favorite guys in baseball, but The Dugout somehow vaulted him ahead and made me like him even more. I can't explain why a fictional AIM chat parody among baseball players has had that effect on me, yet it has.

I am a Cub fan living in Cleveland, and you won't find a single person in Cleveland rooting for Thome. The Indians had a mid-season trade all set for Thome in his last year there, but he convinced them not to make the deal, claiming that he was definitely staying in Cleveland. He then signed during the off-season with Philadelphia - for an offer very comparable to his offer from Cleveland. There is no other player who is hated in Clveland as much as Thome is!

First off, congrats for #500 Mr. Thome.

On Mike and Mike they were asking if Thome is a HOF player. He's reached 500 at one of the fastest rates of any player in history but only has 1900something hits. If this guy played for the Yanks he'd be a God and it would be a no brainer.

Exactly. If Phil Rizzuto is HOF-material, I mean, come ON...

If Thome played for the Red Sox or Yankees, he would be a first ballot HOF'er. As it is he played for Cleveland, Philly and the WSox. 500 HR's is nothing to sneeze at so I think he makes it. I think he has a couple good years left too.

Nice job Thome. I just wish you didn't play for a jerk manager and horses arse owner.
