I wonder if Wilken would jump over if the Pirates take the Jays guy?

I certainly hope not, but with the uncertainty surrounding the Cubs' ownership I could see him wanting job certainty rather than risking the possibility of the new owner cleaning house. I also wonder if MacPhail might see an opportunity to raid the Cubs' front office.

Let them raid away! :D

I hope a new owner is found soon and get this doubt our of the way ASAP.

They would be smart to grab up DePo before Cuban does.
Why would they want that guy, 1st of all he cant evaluate and secondly, he tried to destroy a talented Dodger organization and the third reason, he's got zero personality. It looks like the Pirates have named Frank Coonelly from Seligs office as the CEO and they want a person who can evaluate which certainly isnt Depodesta, it should be someone like Logan White who's one of the main reasons why the Dodgers are becoming successful once again or our guy Tim Wilken who's track record is 2nd to none!

Can someone give me a decent reason for Depodesta being chased out of LA beyond his lack of charisma or the fact that Bill Plaschke hates all things nerd?

It's the lack of charisma...McCourt HATED him.

Of course every Dodger fan in LA hates McCourt now, seeing as he's not a great owner.

I dug up a couple articles when I was defending him at the end of the "Do we really want this cubs team to win" thread.

Didn't DePo rebuild their system?

No, DePo didn't rebuild anything. He just made a couple really good trades that were universally panned at the time and ended up being a big reason why the team was/is a playoff contender. Logan White, their scouting director (in charge of the drafts), is the man to be credited with the building of their system.

I should say universally panned by the media.

Good lord! There isn't an ounce of truth to that post!

i give the credit to the 80 year old scout who saw something special in andre ethier

Such a great read:

What a [expletive] douche that writer is, trying to discredit the work LaMacchia does.

LaMacchia has forgotten more baseball in a week than the writer, I, or anyone on this board will ever know about the game.

Then maybe he should get out of the game if he keeps forgetting stuff.

The douche writer is Plaschke for trying to mythologize somebody who supposedly saw something special in a player everybody already knew about.

Right. I don't think KenTremendus was discrediting the work of Lamacchia. I think he was lampooning the terrible article. It's not like the guy found Roy Hobbs in a field in Nebraska. Etheer was a known quantity.

He knows more about the game than the writer ever wishes he could.

Sure it was a fluff piece about the man, if he was a younger scout, the article never gets written.

The man has dedicated his life to the game, one article and one instance where it glorifies him is fine by me, regardless of how everyday that action is for a scout.

Of course it is followed by some pinhead on a statistical rant tries to belittle his work.

Frustrates me that someone that has given so much to the game gets thrown over the fire b/c someone wants to turn it into a scout/stat debate.

Sure he was, he was critical of his methods of scouting...

In the corner sat the old scout who has never worked with radar gun, computer or even stopwatch.

Just like good scouts do. Good scouts never use scouting tools. They trust their [expletive] eyes, and their guts, and their spleens. Why?

He didn't need a stopwatch to judge his hustle. He didn't need a computer to feel his swing. And when LaMacchia ever needs a radar gun reading, well, he just asks one of the scouts sitting next to him.

Luckily, one of the scouts has a radar gun. Because otherwise, LaMacchia would have no idea how fast the guy's throwing

Said Ethier: "I thought he was just some crazy old man yelling at me from the stands."

I don't blame you, Andre.

A couple of old-timers quickly set the kid straight.

LaMacchia was a right-handed pitcher who won a couple of big-league games for St. Louis and Washington in the mid-1940s then became a legendary talent evaluator.

He played the game! Hey Joe Morgan -- rest easy, man, this guy played the game! You can listen to his opinions. They are valid!

Dedicated his life to the game, given some much to the game? Oh come on with this hogwash. These aren't nuns. The guy gets paid to watch young men play baseball and tell his bosses what he thinks of them, that's it?

This is a crap article written by a crap writer who constantly puts out crap nonsense that focuses heavily on mythologizing the sport of baseball in ways that undermine the reality of the sport.

He has, you spend 51 years of your life doing something whether it's scouting or working in a factory, you've given your life to it. Between his time playing, scouting (signing players pre-draft), and coaching he has given alot to this game.

He got a job and decided not to switch careers. Big deal.
