uecker knew he was going to get booed for it, i'm sure. he probably thought it was funny. he's still a very classy broadcaster with at least a sense of humor.

i wouldn't expect him to sing it the right way, he's a the brewers announcer and a fan, to be sure. what i don't enjoy seeing is bielema getting grilled by the brewers "sideline" reporter on why he sang "root root root for the cubbies" at wrigley field the previous week.

the guy grew up in illinois (p'town represent) as a cubs fan, and i doubt he's changing allegiances just because he is the head coach of a completely unrelated COLLEGE team in a completely different city. what a crock or horse crap. i hate the brewers tv team.

Though he sometimes joked he was born on an oleo run to Illinois, Uecker was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up watching the minor-league Milwaukee Brewers at Borchert Field. He signed a professional contract with his hometown Milwaukee Braves in 1956 and made his major league debut as a catcher with the club in 1962.

He could've said "Root, root, root for the Midwestern team" or something. Saying "Brewers" in our house and not expecting boos? Please. Even I would've booed him.

And they weren't even saying "Boo"... They were saying "UUEEEE-ker."

cubs fans care enough about the 7th inning stretch to boo someone? get a grip

You're right. People booed because they all hate Bob Uecker and think he's the devil. It had nothing to do with the fans wanting to uphold a tradition and think it's wrong for a competing team's broadcaster to sing the stretch.

You mean it was wrong for Vin Scully and Jack Buck to sing it as well?

i was at a (the?) game where vin sang .. pretty sure it was the year harry died, and he, in fact, said "cubbies." i thought it was very cool.

He could have just held the mic out to the audience for the "root root" part.

Exactly. I like Uecker a lot as well, but don't try to tell me he didn't deserve to be booed last night. His team is in the middle of a pennant race against our team in one of the biggest games of the year. The fans had every right to boo him and I probably would have booed him if I were at Wrigley as well.

I don't get why this is a story.

There was no reason for him to avoid saying Brewers, and there's nothing wrong with booing him.

I haven't read this whole thread, but Uecker sings every year and always says:

"I'll root root root for the Brewers, you do the same for the Cubs"

or some form of that. He's been doing it for years, and every year when he says Brewers, people start to boo. It's not new, and I don't think it's that big of a deal. They are our division rivals and it's a tight race. I think I'd be more concerned with the fans if they didn't boo that.

Fans in the stands have limited options when singing the stretch, say nothing (hard to do), sing along (easy to do), boo the victim in the booth (easy to do when it's the Ueck). I don't feel bad for Uecker, you think he went into the booth thinking he wasn't going to get booed? He knew it was coming and I don't feel bad for laughing at it. I'm sure Uecker took it in stride, this whole thing is no big deal. What else were the fans going to do, sing along with "take me out with the Brewers"?

what song is that part of?

again, the people were booing him long before he got to the "root, root" part

He was introduced as the Milwaukee Brewers announcer, and most everybody probably knew he was going to say Brewers.

Seriously, there's no story here.

Un-classy response to an classy guy. Stop booing everything guys, you're embarrassing yourselves.

good God, its just booing! Have a little fun in your lives. I don't think Uecker is at all concerned about it - its part of the fun. Its not like they are throwing batteries or crap on the field or something.

If you, a representative off a rival team (particularly in a playoff race) go on the home team's PA and suggest people root for the rival team, you should expect to be booed. Bob certainly did.

He's made a habit of provoking the Cubs fans at wrigley.

Can't blame him, either, after hearing all the cubs fans in milwaukee

I definitely agree. My comment was in response to people acting like he had no choice. I'm not all torn up that he said Brewers, but there were ways around it.

The stretch is our thing. If Uecker wants to butcher our tradition he deserves to get booed. Cheers to all who did boo him.

The stretch is not our thing. The stretch is done across baseball. The Cubs choose to make it stupid. And they've used several opposing announcers and opposing team affiliated people who regularly throw-in the visiting teams name.

The strech is more popular with the Cubs because of Harry, and then the celebrity thing.(whether people think it is stupid or not). I don't see the big deal about booing Uecker.

But even Harry didn't start it with the Cubs; he started it while he was with the White Sox. Sl although the guest singer may be a Cubs' tradition, the idea of singing in the first place isn't.

Exactly. And as "lovable" as the guy was, it's annoying as all get out that the identity of this team is so largely defined by Harry-freakin'-Caray. The Stretch is so far from being some kind of "sacred tradition" it's not even funny.

what's more insulting, what MojoPin just said or having people like Jeff Gordon and Kellie Pickler "honoring the memory" of Harry each day?
