IF we could get him healthy and back ready to play by Tuesday it would be OUTSTANDING....a HUGE boost.

my best friend(brewer fan) just called me asking if it was true that soriano is on track to get back for the series next week. I said yeah he looks like he has been healing quite fast. He started swearing up a storm: "this has been the worst *^&*&*& month ever!!!!"

Basically what I was expecting this entire time. Tuesday in Wrigley is going to be rocking, I am jealous of anyone who is going to that series.

Anyone think there's a possibility that the Sept. 1 date was considered due to the playoff roster deadline of Aug. 31 unless the player is on the DL? Which would give them time to determine who would be on the playoff roster between most likely Murton and Pie. Not that its a smart idea but its possible.

And if he does come up who gets sent down and left off of the playoff roster?

I don't think the motivation was to specifically give them time to decide between Murton and Pie in the playoffs, rather, it provides them flexibility in general, not having to send anybody down for Soriano when he returns.

No 2 tickets together for one, and since this game is on a weekday I cant go. If I lived in Chicago it would be different, but since they decided to make this a weekday series instead of a weekend series like it should be, Ill be watching on TV.

"He's going to play unless he slips coming off the airplane," joked Piniella.

WTF Lou, you really need to learn a little more about the history of ball club.

Next trib headline

"Soriano done for the year after freak slip at the airport"

It's going to be interesting to see who gets sent down to make room for Soriano. Pretty much comes down to Pie, Fontenot, or Murton.

It cannot be Fontenot. He's the only backup middle IF. The Cubs definitely won't want to have Soriano as the emergency IF with him just coming back from injury, and nobody else is capable. So as bad as Fontenot may be, he's staying.

So it's Pie or Murton. My guess is that it will be Pie, but that's only a guess.

The perfect move would be to send down Pignatiello. He doesn't need to be eligible for the playoff roster, and he can be brought up again in less than a week. If the Cubs desperately need a bullpen arm before September 1st during the Milwaukee series due to overuse, they can always call up one of the other relievers instead.

However, I don't see that happening. It will be Pie or Murton, with probably a slight lean towards Pie going down.

It has to be Pie. Assuming Pagan comes back in September he would be eligible for the playoff roster (if there is one) and provides pretty much the same skills at this point as Pie.

I think Murton is more likely. When it comes down to a decision about which one they want to keep up to maintain postseason eligibility I think they'll keep Pie for his speed and defense. I think Monroe spelled the end of Murton's postseason hopes.

Postseason eligibility should have nothing to do with the decision assuming the Cubs aren't dumb. When postseason rosters are submitted Pagan should be on it along with Novoa, Guzman, and Prior.(This is assuming Pagan doesn't come back this year, and I don't think he will.

Huh?

You submit your postseason rosters with guys who will end the season on the DL. Then when the postseason rolls around you can replace them with anyone on the 40 man roster who was in the organization on August 31st. (See K-Rod)

Ok gotcha

Are you certain you can do this?

Yes players on the 25 or 60 man disabled list as of August 31st can be added to the postseason roster; however, I'm not sure you can begin with disabled players on your post season roster and then replace them with anyone you want.

My assumption has always been that unless an exemption is granted by MLB (it occasionally is), a player must be on the 25 man roster or the disabled list on August 31.

So if Murton is on Iowa's active roster on August 31st, he could not be on the Cubs post season roster, unless an exemption is granted.

Does anyone know for sure?

I've always thought these shenanigans could be avoided. Why not allow teams to select any player from their August 31 40-man roster plus 60-day DL to be on their post season roster. Post season rosters could be adjusted after each series.
