Former major league All-Star Jose Offerman was arrested Tuesday night after charging the mound and hitting the pitcher and catcher with his bat during an independent minor league game.

Bridgeport police said Offerman was arrested, but did not detail the charge. Police said he posted bond.

Offerman, playing for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League, homered in the first inning. The next inning, he was hit by a pitch from Bridgeport's Matt Beech and charged the mound with his bat.

Offerman hit Beech in the hands and struck catcher John Nathans in the head.

Hahhaahhaha this is awesome, now to search for Youtube video.

A former ML player taking a swing with his bat at a pitcher and catcher is awesome???!

Not at all humorous as far as I'm concerned.

Oh come on, the guy snapped I am pretty sure we'd all like to see a video.

And it doesn't seem like anyone was seriously hurt.

And with a bat it's definitely assault, if he INTENTIONALLY hit the guy in the head then he's gonna be in some deep doo-doo. The article doesn't exactly elaborate on how they were hit or how hard they were hit.

We don't know if this guy went in swinging the bat or if he had the bat in his hand and it accidentally hit the guys in the heat of the moment, gonna need a video to determine that.

In the picture I saw he carried the bat to the mound with him.

I remember Barry Bonds doing this a few years back when someone threw behind him, isn't it his teammates and the umpires job to try to get the bat away from him?

Ok so that answers some questions... looks like the guy who got hit in the head maybe got hit by the bat when he was raising it up... hope he's ok but I'd still like to see a vid.

Offerman, a former Bluefish, homered on the first pitch of the game by Beech. An inning later, Offerman was hit on his left calf by an 0-and-1 pitch. He immediately charged the mound, wielding his bat in his right hand. Beech, who had his arms outstretched in an attempt to defend himself, was struck on the fingertips as both benches immediately emptied.

Nathans was in the middle of the sea of bodies coming to the aid of Beech. Offerman struck Nathans in the back of the head with his backswing, and Nathans later suffered from nausea, Bluefish left-hander Mike Porzio said.

"He hit him with a cut fastball in the left calf," Bluefish manager Tommy John said of the pitch that began the melee. "And the next thing you know, Offerman's going to the mound with his bat over his head taking swings at Beech. He took at least two, maybe even three (swings)."

Well, gotta give the guy credit for going after the pitcher's hands. If you're going to flip a lid and try to end some careers, at least be smart enough to hit him where it hurts...

Freaking psycho

Seems like that would have to be an assault charge imho. Time for Jose to hang it up I think.

Battery if he actually made contact.

Oh wow...he's gonna get a Ron Artest-like suspension for that.

If a player wields a bat in attacking a pitcher, a Ron Artest-like suspension won't cut it (If I'm in charge, that is). He'll join Pete Rose and Joe Jackson.

Can anyone say "Roid Rage?"

Seriously, though, is it such a mental grind in the Independant League that it can cause you to snap!

Both Beech and Bluefish catcher John Nathans were injured by Offerman, who was struck by a pitch and rushed the mound. Offerman was later arrested. A source said he was charged with second-degree assault and faces a $10,000 bond.

pitchers use the ball to hurt batters all the time, it's only fair that hitters return the favor

Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson all hope you're joking.

Though Sammy probably agrees with you.

I like how you can see the firstbaseman's glove falling to the ground in the background of the photo, but the firstbaseman isn't anywhere in the picture.

Police said Beech, a left-handed pitcher, had a broken right middle finger.

same link as above

How could he break a finger that was in his glove?

It was the most solid contact Offerman has made since the 1999 season.
