Stick Barry back in 1921 and, barring a hate-crime, he would put up numbers that would have had him burned at the stake for witchcraft.

Thank Xenu it's over.

not yet, hes only tied it

and every HR he hits from now on is record breaking, hopefully they break in to show all of his AB's for the rest of his career

You just described one of the things I'd consider my baseball hell.

I think that if Griffey had never been injured for such a long period of time, in the prime of his career, he'd most definetly be considered the best ever. He plays in a time that is tougher than any other, and he's never been even questioned about steriod use. I hope that he can stay healthy for a couple more years and hopefully pass Mays at the very least.

BTW, I consider Maddux and Clemens 1 and 1A on the list of best pitchers ever.

Yeah, but that will hopefully get less press.

noway him breaking it gets less press than him tieing it

I'd be interested to see how a modern stud would fare back then, but I don't think it would be that enormous of a difference as you think.

It's all relative. There's disadvantages and advantages of playing in his time that Babe faced that Barry doesn't and vice versa. By Ruth's time, baseball was very much the same game it is now as opposed to Honus Wagner's heyday or even the early years of Cobb.

Back in 1921 he wouldn't have had the cream and the clear to assist his body recovery time, his lounge chair and plasma TV in the clubhouse or his body armor to protect him from inside pitches. Not to mention that the rules of the game back then were much more favorable to pitchers (lower mound, doctoring of baseballs allowed, etc). What Ruth did as a comparison to his peers is mindboggling, much more dominant than even Bonds has been to other current players.

I think the answer you want is Barrett, who was catching for the Montreal Expos when Mac hit #70. Marrero and Lampkin caught for STL. However, Barrett is not catching tonight, Bard is.

It's a shame he couldn't do it in LA - I'd have loved to see the reaction at Dodger Stadium. Ahh well, they hate him nearly as much in San Diego. Amusing that the Padres "Barry-proofed" Petco Park and he ties the record there.

And yes, Barry > Babe Ruth.

the huge alley in right center. though right down the line it isn't as bad as the rest of the park with that crazy section of seats that juts out from the foul pole.

If SD "Barry-proofed" Petco Park then did SF also "Barry-proof" PacBell? It is deeper to right center has the high wall in straight away RF.
