The Cubs reportedly still have a shot at acquiring Eric Gagne, who could be used as a closer over Ryan Dempster.

The Journal News' Peter Abraham believes the Red Sox and the Cubs are the favorites, with the Red Sox offering David Murphy and Kason Gabbard. If Boston moves Gabbard, it means Jon Lester would get to stick around as the team's fifth starter.

I wish people would stop pretending another bullpen arm is the biggest need.

You don't think he'd help? I'd agree its not the biggest need, but would really shoten some games for the opposition if it moved Marmol, Howry and Dempster each down a spot.

If you can't fill your biggest need do you ignore other options that could still possibly help?

If the Sox are offering Gabbard and Murphy, the price might be high for the Cubs to acquire Gagne. I don't know a lot about the Sox minor league system but I think Murphy is pretty highly regarded.

That's right. I forgot. You're only allowed to work on one trade at a time. So if they are talking to the Rangers about Gagne, they can't talk about a trade with anybody else.

Gagne, Wood, Dempster, Howry, Wuertz, and Marmol from the right side of the pen. Not to mention Petrick, who has been great when he's been up. And the various others who have shown flashes.

Certainly wouldn't hurt us though. I think although Dempster is fine and his 'stuff' looks better than last year, his disappointing performance last year is still very fresh in the minds of Cubs fans.

I missed the part of the OP's post where he said that a bullpen arm was the Cubs' biggest need.

I think everyone here knows your position on where you think the Cubs need help. No need to interject it unnecessarily.

There's no need to waste chips on Gagne. It's not about wasting valuable trade talking time, it's about wasting resources on acquiring him.
