Better that he goes to Boston than Milwaukee.

True.

+2

I hope he waives the no-trade. Does he have something personal against Boston? I'd play in beantown in a second, but uh, nobody's asking

I suspect he has no problem with Boston. If you can only provide a short list of teams to which you can't be traded without permission, for the most part you'd include teams on the list that you expect to be traded to. It gives you an extra negotiating tool.

If Gagne doesn't waive his no-trade clause to go to a team with a legitimate shot at winning the WS, his picture must go next to the word 'stupid' in the dictionary from here on out.

There's a financial side of it for Gagne. He has a games-finished clause in his contract. If he's not closing, that could be 3 million plus that he's losing if he's not the closer and Papelbon is. My guess is that Gagne will try to get the Red Sox to guarantee him an opportunity to close or guarantee a portion of the forfeited money.

I think I read Ken Rosenthal say that the Sox will entice him by guarantee him all the incentives in his contract.

That should help move things along then.

Boston Globe/NESN - Eric Gagne has reportedly agreed to come to the Red Sox and be the setup man, according to NESN's Tom Caron. The Sox would send outfield prospects David Murphy and Engel Beltre, along with pitcher Kason Gabbard, to Texas, according to NESN

Not really a great return, IMO. Murphy looks like a 4th outfielder to me, and Gabbard is probably being overrated due to his strong performance the past few weeks. Engel Beltre was a big int'l signing, but he's a long, long way from the bigs.
