Just let Soto do it, this isn't rocket science.

No kidding.

Soto is also better defensively. Kendall's throws down to second haven't even been close whereas Soto appeared to be putting it right on the money.

What's the point of Laird when we have Soto? Either give Soto the job or go balls out for Salty. It's not brain surgery.

I'm not going to assume there is anything legitimate about the Laird rumor.

Laird and Soto do have remarkably similar minor league numbers, although that doesn't take into account 2007.

Soto - .272/.353/.402 1823 AB, 221 BB, 412 K

Laird - .271/.348/.406 1933 AB, 210 BB, 405 K

From Will Carroll:

Do the Cubs already regret trading for Jason Kendall? He's 1-for-15 and before anyone says "small sample size," I'll point out that his performance in Chicago only continues the precipitous decline seen in Oakland. The Cubs can't expect to contend with an offensive black hole at catcher. One possibility is trying to follow on the rumored Rangers-Braves deal--if the Rangers get Jarrod Saltalamacchia, the Cubs have asked their scouts for an opinion on Gerald Laird.

Admitting a mistake this quickly by making another trade for a catcher would be really out of character for Hendry.

He's done it before.

I thought he was being sarcastic, considering that's exactly how he ended up with Kendall in the first place.

I don't think Hendry views trading Barret as a mistake. I was thinking of other times where Hendry has moved an at-the-time recent acquisition only weeks later, such as Matt Lawton and Jody Gerut.

Or Rob Bowen.

Jose Hernandez.

why does everyone assume the cubs have the slightest bit of interest in salty? if they were willing to give a young catcher a chance, they would have already done it with soto.

We have Soto in the minors, why not use him?

probably veteran infatuation more than anything else

if the cubs called up soto and gave him the job, kendall would have more time to focus on his veteran influence/leadership. as a backup, i bet he could really just influence the hell out of young geovanny. sounds like a plan, get on it jim.

actually, i think that was the reason for the trade, or at least i am really really hoping it was

Isn't there a significant talent difference between these two? I don't see how you can even start to make a comparison.

Yes...I was...I think it's funny how often Hendry gets buyers remorse on crappy players.

Soto has the same problem that Mike Fontenot had.

Not sure what that is, but it looks like he's got it.

Got a couple of short stints big leagues never having a chance to do much, and when Mike finally got his chance he's been solid.

Isn't Hank due back fairly soon?
I haven't seen a specific timeframe, but he is out on a rehab assignment now (Peoria, I believe).

There's a limit to how long they can keep him out on a rehab assignment though... the way things are going would anyone be surprised if the Cubs DFA'd Kendall and activated Blanco in a few days? I will be very disappointed if they get rid of Hill just to keep Kendall.

Maybe Kendall will end up on a DL stint of his own....

This is really pathetic. We're going to have put like 13 people behind the plate this year by the time it's all said and done, we're already at like what, six?

1- Barrett

2- Blanco

3- Bowen

4- Hill

5- Soto

6- Kendall

Unless it's changed, I believe that limit is 20 days (although I don't think that limit applies to pitchers).

I doubt there is a limit on pitchers because it seems like Miller has been "rehabbing" for 3 months

How could you be disappointed with them getting rid of Hill to keep ANYONE? Having seen pathetic offensive catchers such as Rich Wrona, Tim Blackwell, and Paul Bako in my days I thought it could not get any worse. Now I have been treated to the Koyie Hill experience this year and know I was wrong.
