It would be a classy move by the Reds to trade him to a contender. Kinda like we did with Maddux last year. The Reds will take 3 or 4 years to get back to competing again anyway.

And a package from the Cubs could actually help speed that up. I think they have to make the deal if the Cubs can take on the salary.

Pure conjecture but maybe, huge maybe the 3rd team is the Braves......we end up with Jr and Salty. The Braves get the much needed pitching in Arroyo maybe Gallagher from us. Reds get Murton or Pie?

The Braves would still have the prospects to grab Tex from Texas.

If not the Braves who could the 3rd team be?

If there is a 3-way deal brewing, there's a good chance that it's the Braves. Buster Olney reported that the Braves were interested in Arroyo. Saltamachia could be the chip they'd be moving, but I doubt that the Cubs could end up with Griffey and Salty. The Reds wouldn't be getting enough in that deal.

If the Cubs offered Pie and Murton they'd be stupid not to take that deal.

So the braves would get Pie and/or Murton? what's the OF situation, other than (most likely) losing Andruw after 07?

Depending on the details, it might not be the best thing for the future of the franchise.

But Hendry needs this trade. It's probably his last significant act as the GM of the Cubs. If it works out it possibly saves his job under new ownership.

I dunno...the Cubs are in contention this year. If they make the playoffs, I don't see a new owner ditching Hendry.

I probably overstated it. If they make the playoffs Hendry's probably secure for another year. Griffey is one the few moves they could make that's like to significantly improve those odds though.

Their outfield situation is weak without Andruw Jones. Diaz, Francouer, Harris, and one decent OF prospect. Very little power in that OF.

This thread is getting me excited again.

It probably shouldn't. I think there'd be more noise if it were imminent. And Bruce Miles seems skeptical.

Even so, I just have a gut feeling about it. Piniella, Hendry & Griffey are all coming off just a little coy.

If Pie and Murton are involved in getting Griffey AND we cannot sign Big Z. Beyond this year doesn't look good. I still am hoping Pie is CF'er of the future w/ Murton as well. Call me dumb.

Dumb. JK.

I'm not big in any way on trading Pie, but at the same time, if we think we can add that big piece that could make the difference between winning the division and playing golf in October, I say you gotta roll the dice. I'm sure Hendry, if these rumors are true, would probably do his best to hold on to Pie, but considering that he thinks Colvin is the second-coming of Jim Edmonds, I'm thinking he might gamble.

If Pie goes, it better be part of a larger deal than just Griffey. If the Reds send Arroyo to ATL and we get Renteria, that might not be too bad. Both players are way under market because of deferred payment in Griffey's case and Boston picking up most of Renteria's salary.

Any update on this?? i have a hard time believing a deal will take place between us and the reds with griffey this close to 600. Was it levine who reported this? if so i'm discounting it already.....

It would all depend on the other players involved, but "under market" or not Griffey and Renteria would be a huge pickup of salary for the new owners.

Renteria is owed about 5M next year, Griffey about 9M. If I'm a potential owner the Cubs look a hell of a lot better of a team to me with both those guys on the roster for 2008 than a 14M cheaper payroll. Add in the fact that it could the reigning world champion cubs and it looks like a good investment to me.

If Junior were to come here, would they keep him in RF? I'd assume so...too injury prone for CF

Probably Right Field, though he would be a much bigger upgrade in CF than RF. If you can get Griffey and Floyd in there a few times that would be an amazing lineup.

It may not be related, but Junior's first injury-free season(thus far) of the millennium has coincided with him playing RF instead of CF everyday.

Don't know why, but I think it is related.

The FSN guys broadcasting the game today (Reds - Cubs) were going on and on in the ninth how Adam Dunn may have made his last at-bat at Great American Ballpark. They didn't speculate on a destination, but it sounded like they new something, but that dosn't mean it's so.

A poster in the game thread seemed to be saying that the announcers said he has had his last at bat, not that he might have had.

Well if the Reds are going on the road, it could have been his last AB at Great American Ballpark playing for the Reds.

I agree with you, except we're not potential buyers and don't forget another $17-20 million for Zambrano.
