Schuerholz is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

yeah, but he just traded a very valuable, long term-inexpensive commodity for a guy who's due to make a killing. yes, a jones's deal is up and he'll be more than replacing that production next year--but i think salty is an all-star sooner than later. both teams got what they wanted.

But unlike a lot of trade deadline deals for guys about to break the bank, he traded for a guy whom he still controls through next year. Tex in Atlanta is pretty huge. He is still very much in his prime, unlike the guys in their 30's we hear about being in their prime.

You're talking about taking your worst performing position on the roster and possibly turning it into top 5 territory. It would be like the Cubs getting Jeter to fill the SS problem, although a much younger Jeter who isn't a liability with the glove.

oh, i'm not saying he got taken on this one, far from it. i just think that both teams got what they wanted, even if schuerholz comes out ahead over the long term as well. texas was not going to sign tex long-term, and they get a young starter to ease the finacial burden significantly over the next several years.

They trade Lofton and Texiera for 2 top prospect catchers? Although they got some pitching in this deal, that should have been their main target.

From what I've heard, the C they got in the lofton deal is brutal on defense. The analyst said that he would probably move to 3B or DH in the big league.

and admittedly, i know next to nothing about elvis.

Think about what Jim Hendry loves in a shortstop.

Now make him 18/19 and at a level well beyond where other people his age are.

Now make him produce enough to make it seem like he might put it together.

There you go.

Salty is likely moving to 1B to replace Texiera. They don't want to wear his bat down by playing C everyday in the Texas heat.

Because that Texas heat affected Pudge so much.

I don't feel so bad about it because there's no way the Cubs could have matched this deal. Atlanta had enough prospects and spare parts to make this deal work.

This should be where things get interesting. The Braves are 4.5 behind the Mets and a game behind the Phillies in the East. They're also 2.5 out in the Wild Card. However, they just replaced their black hole at 1B (between Franco, Salty, and Thorman, it was baaaaaaaaaaaaaad) with one of the best young hitters in baseball. Moreover, they get to hang onto him next year.

So...what do the Mets and Phillies do now, considering Atlanta just patched up one of its biggest holes?

The Mets have to get an OF, I think.

I still don't know if the Braves have enough starting pitching to make up the ground. The Braves are now behind Philly, NY Mets, Dodgers, Padres, D'Backs, Cubs, and Brewers for 2 playoff spots. 2.5 games isn't much to make up, but they gotta at least jump 6 teams.

And Salty's from Florida, played in the GCL, Sally, Carolina, and Southern League, ohh yeah and Hotlanta. I'm sure hes not used to heat.

They might not. But with a top 5 offense improving from the worst to one of the best 1B production, they probably don't need a ton.

But they only "have" to jump 2 teams, Philly and the Mets.

I don't think it has anything to do with being "used to" the heat. Whether you are from Florida or Michigan, catching in a place like Texas is going to take its toll over time. I don't think it means much to include Pudge, who is an outlier on almost everything as it pertains to the normal catcher.

Jamie Newberg sent me this email about who the pitching prospects included in the deal are.

Dave Sessions and Jim Reeves of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram are reporting that the two pitchers coming back in the deal will be Neftali (not “Nestali”) Feliz, a 19-year-old righthander pitching in the short-season Appalachian League, and a second pitching prospect to be determined. Feliz is 2-0, 2.05 in seven appearances for Danville, fanning 28 and walking 12 in 26.1 innings, and allowing just 16 hits (.178 opponents’ average).

I didn't think he was still producing that well. I think I read that a lot of scouts are starting to question if the bat is eer going to be what it takes for Andrus to be a productive big leaguer.

This is tainted because of his dealings with the Cubs but, when's the last time Schuerholz dealt quality for quality? JD Drew deal?

I think this is a good trade for both sides. Texas had to start rebuilding. As hard as that is for the fans, it needs to be done. Salty will go a long way in achieving that. He's a future elite level catcher. Andrus may or may not be a major league shortstop in the future, but he's a prospect with enough of an upside to at least be worth taking a flier on. Finally, the pitchers that Texas gets look to be fairly good pieces. All in all, as good a deal as Texas could have expected.

The Braves get an elite hitter. While they paid a high price, it was with surplus talent. Salty's value is diminished some if he's not used at catcher. Since he was blocked by McCann, it was a smart idea to move him. Andrus was blocked by Escobar, and the Braves held on to the best of their young pitchers.

This deal looks like a win-win for both teams.

I think I might have taken LA's offer instead.

I'm hearing the offer of Loney, Ethier and Meloan never was really on the table.

Although jjg could have mean LAAoA's offer.

Well, that one hit a snag over a third player. The Angels offered Kotchman and Saunders but wouldn't include the third player the Rangers wanted.

I think the deal with the Braves has more upside considering they couldn't get the third player from the Angels.

no, I was referring to the Dodgers. didn't read all the pages in this thread or otherwise know it wasn't a real offer.

According to some guys at the Newberg Report, the Rangers asked for that, but the Dodgers weren't willing to pay that much.
