...in yesterday's game. Man its nice to see him at least trying not to wear out our best picthers in games that have already been decided. What a change from what we have seen in the past.

I also very much like that he let Gallagher go the rest of the way. Great way to showcase him to potential trade partners and get the kid some experience at the same time. He looked pretty good out there on top of it.

Zambrano was probably really confused

*end of 5th*

LOU: Good job Z, you're done for the day

Z: Huh? It's only the fifth inning

LOU: Yep, but you have a 9 run lead. No need to keep you out there

Z: I didn't realize I threw 135 pitches already

I wish Lou would have pitched Eyre at least an inning or two. If Jim isn't going to DFA him, and if he hasn't by now you seriously have to question if it will ever happen, we're going to have to get him back on track sometime. We're essentially going with 10 pitchers on the roster.

I was very happy to see this. I was at a game with Tim a few years back in San Diego and Dusty left Zambrano in there with a 52 run lead for like 8 innings and over 120 pitches.

I'll see if I can dig up the box score.

Except they have 12, so who is the other unused arm?

I do agree that he's a complete waste of roster spot if he can't even be used in blowouts. He's gone 3 times in July after just 7 appearances in June. I really wonder what sort of plan they have for him.

August 7th, 2003, Zambrano had a 9-0 lead after 5. Ended up throwing 120 pitches, most of those in the 6th inning.

Gallagher. He pitched for the first time in 10 days yesterday.

Z: But Dusty told me I am the horse and not a man if I don't finish the game

LOU: That's why I'm here and he's not

I remember one in April in 03 or 04, I think, when we were in Pittsburgh and up by a ton, and Dusty left Z in through 7, and let him go like 120 pitches or so.

I was in class and following the game online, and it took every ounce of my strength not to burst out in profanity.

Speaking of Z...

Asked about throwing to either Koyie Hill or Jason Kendall, Carlos Zambrano said he didn’t have a preference, before chuckling and adding, “I don’t have problems with catchers.’’

How can you NOT love this guy (unless you're abuck)?

Erik, was that this game?

I remember that very well and used similar profanity as you, I'm guessing, when Z was still on the mound in the 7th and 8th with the Cubs up by 7-8.

This one was even more indefensible:

I think he's kinda acting like a jerk with that quote.

I don't think Z intended it as an obnoxious jab on Barrett or anything - the way the Trib reported this it sounded like an unintended joke at the end of a rambling stream-of-consciousness answer to a question about Hill:

"The guy came from Triple A and he knows what to do behind the plate," Zambrano said. "He calls good games. Sometimes when I try to throw any pitch, he puts one finger down, and that's what you're looking for. You don't want to shake them off and call time out and bring your catcher to the mound, especially me. You know me. I like to pitch fast, and if I want to throw that pitch, I throw it. It's good to have him catching me. I think the next time I will try Jason. I know he's a good catcher, and I don't have problems with catchers."

This ranks among my all-time favorite games. Haren couldn't get the third out to save his life in the 4th and got a standing ovation when he got pulled, haha.

--- 3 A Ramirez Single to CF (Ground Ball)

1-- 3 T Hollandsworth Single to RF (Ground Ball); Ramirez to 3B; Hollandsworth to 2B/Adv on throw

RO -23 8 D Lee Groundout: 3B-1B; Ramirez Scores; Hollandsworth to 3B

O 1-3 R Martinez Baserunner Out Advancing; Patterson out at 2B/C-2B

R --3 6 " " Single to RF (Line Drive); Hollandsworth Scores

1-- 7 C Zambrano Single to CF (Line Drive); Martinez to 3B

R 1-3 5 T Walker Single to RF (Ground Ball); Martinez Scores; Zambrano to 3B

R 1-3 1 M Barrett Single to SS (Ground Ball); Zambrano Scores; Walker to 2B

RRR 12- 4 M Alou Home Run (Line Drive to LF-CF); Walker Scores; Barrett Scores

--- 2 A Ramirez Double to CF (Fly Ball)

R -2- 1 T Hollandsworth Single to CF (Ground Ball); Ramirez Scores

Cal Eldred replaces Danny Haren pitching and batting 9th

RR 1-- 4 D Lee Home Run (Fly Ball to LF); Hollandsworth Scores
