Is it possible Pagan would be included in any deals, namely Dunn or Griffey? I'm not sure of his contract situation, but I imagine he's dirt cheap, he plays solid defense, he's had some flashes of power this year, and he's flexible as far as playing different outfield positions. Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problem with him on the team, but would some teams be interested if they couldn't have Pie?

Good point, they might.

I think trading Pagan right now is a good idea. He is probably at his peak in career value.
Since the Cubs got him for $10,000 I'd have to say you are correct.

In fact, he sucks and always has sucked. If Hendry wasn't a "tools" guy he wouldn't even be on a major league roster.

If the Cubs could get anything for him I'd be ecstatic.

He's a fine fourth outfielder. Definitely prefer his situation on this team to Jones'.

forget Pagan, send Jones - he is worse and will likely be more coveted by other teams just due to his name.

You think other teams are prejudiced against pagans?

The Angels, probably. The Devil Rays, probably not. :D

Maybe if Hendry told teams that Pagan is Carlos Beltran Jr. somebody would bite.

Are you saying he's not?

Well, looking at him from another team's standpoint, he's got great speed, good defense, can play any outfield spot, is only 25, and is very cheap. He could be valuable as a throw-in to get a deal done.

No he's not. I'd definitely prefer to have my pinky toe cut off than my entire leg.

Wait, so you would prefer that the Cubs get rid of Pagan before getting rid of Jones?

No. I don't want either my leg or my toes to be amputated. I prefer that neither happen just as I prefer that niether Jones nor Pagan were on the team.

There are 47 CF's with 100 or more plate appearances this year. Pagan is 13th in OPS out of those 47.

To be fair, last year Pagan finished 34th out of 45 in CF's-but that would put him right in the middle of backups.

As a starter, Pagan would be awful. I'm wondering how much more you can expect though for a backup OF that can play CF. If you look around the league, there probably aren't 5 backup CF's that have put up the numbers that Pagan has had for the Cubs in 2006/2007 combined (and if there are 5, I would wager there certainly aren't 10).

I don't have a problem with Pagan. Cheap, decent #'s for a backup, some speed and decent D. If used properly, he fills a role pretty well. I wouldn't be heartbroken to see him go, but why should he.

Jones on the other hand...

I definitely think you take your Pagan hatred to the unnecessary extreme. He's a decent 5th OF. As the primary backup CF and occasional pinch runner, defensive replacement, pinch hitter, he's fine. Pretty much every team has guys that are similar or worse, and most have guys that are much worse. As an example, the Mets seems to have 4-5 guys who keep rotating around their roster putting up a low .300 OBP with a SLG in the high 300s or low 400s. Pagan is currently at .278/.320/.461, above his career line of .258/.311/.417. His current OPS+ is 100 (85 career). Certainly he's not a great bench player. But he's not a Neifi/Macias type of complete waste either. He makes minimum wage and plays to the level you would expect a 5th OF to play.
