IF Cuban were to buy the Cubs, what should be his first move?

Is he a Moneyball man?

I don't know his baseball philosophy. What I do know is he wants to win more than he wants to breathe. You can bet your balls he'll surround himself with an array of smart baseball people including sabermetricians.

I find it difficult to believe he wouldn't make sabermetricians a part of his organization, but I also have never heard him speak about how he would run a baseball franchise if given the opportunity

Depends on when a deal went down.

If he buys in October/November, and this team isn't coming off a deep playoff run, I think he needs to clean house. Although maybe he keeps McDonough around due to his success at marketing the team. Then he hires a president/COO type. He would probably align himself with somebody prior to the purchase.

If a deal lags on through January/February, I think he waits to see how 2008 looks before making any moves. Tell everybody he wants to evaluate everything. If they get off to a slow start in 2008, then he guts it and starts fresh. If they contend, he probably waits out the season.

I don't want to read the whole thread, so can someone tell me what the overall consensus is? Would Cuban be a good owner?

Reading is exercise for the mind. It will be good for you.

The overall consensus is that you should read the data for yourself and make up your own mind. Relying on the summary of others is a sure way to have no intelligent thoughts of your own.

I'd like to hear what Sideshow Mel has to say.

There's no telling how Cuban would be as an owner at this point. He's probably a safer bet than a lot of potential owners, though.

His players love him and he's surrounded himself with a bunch of stat guys in Dallas. Jeff Sagrin (statistician for USA Today) does custom player stats for him amongst other. He's read Moneyball and has been trying to develop a comparable system for basketball for the last few years. He's not a traditional owner at all and thinks outside the box. Anyone can e-mail him and he's probably going to respond. He blogs and reads his comments on Blog Maverick.

He wants to win so he'd spend money on top of that. We'd be a dynasty in the NL with him as the owner.

He's a fan of the Cubs and loves Wrigley, and likely minority owner Todd Wagner is a Chicagoland native.

I'd expect online coverage to improve signficantly (he'd probably push against the mlb.com blackout rules) and all the Cubs games would be in HD. HDNet would probably simulcast some Cubs games. Wrigley would definitely have Wifi throughout the whole park (not that you can't get on open networks from across the street anyway).

Would love to be a fly on the wall at MLB owners meeting if Cuban somehow got approved.

Cuban's efforts to enter the already crowded field to purchase the team is being met with some speculation. The Chicago Tribune summed up Cuban's efforts to buy the team in its Thursday edition as follows: "And while Internet billionaire Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has expressed interest, most observers think Major League Baseball would balk at a potential owner as unpredictable and outspoken as Cuban."

When e-mailed by the Tribune to respond to the sentence, Cuban replied via e-mail: "I never comment on 'most observers' reports. It's like responding to a random blog post, a waste of time."

Nice opinion piece on MSNBC - I agree 100%, every word:

Cuban may or may not need baseball, but baseball absolutely needs him. Bud Selig and his Myrmidons in the commissioner’s office may not fully appreciate that. They’re more likely to look at Cuban’s history in the NBA, which is one of collecting enormous fines for blasting the league, its officials and its policies, and shudder at the thought of having to deal with him.

But if they weigh the benefits against the risks, they’d see that the game is far better off with him than without him. His sins against David Stern’s sensibilities have been sins of passion for his team, and passion is what every game needs.

And no team needs it more than the Cubs, who are arguably one of the top three franchises in the game in terms of fan interest and cachet. My list would have the Yankees first, the Red Sox second and the Cubs third, with not a lot separating them. After the Cubs, I’d go with the Dodgers, and after that, I’d stop worrying about it.

Cuban will truck no BS, that's why he's perfect for this team.

It's obvious the majority of MLB fans want Cuban to get a fair shot. Hopefully MLB will listen to the fans and at least give him the same chance as the others.
