It's been too long without a Griffey thread on here

Talk persists that Adam Dunn could soon be wearing another team's uniform (Angels? Dodgers? Astros?), and even he believes it. Ken Griffey Jr. could be moved, too, and forget Seattle. Insiders say he'll only go to Chicago or Atlanta.

And also from a seperate article, this type of deal would seem to make sense for both sides:

One of many trade rumors making the rounds at the All-Star Game had the Braves among a handful of teams still interested in Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira, the former Georgia Tech standout who is eligible for free agency after the season. Two potential sticking points: The Rangers would probably accept nothing less than top Braves prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia and another young player, and Teixeira is represented by agent Scott Boras and is expected to ask for a long-term contract worth perhaps $20 million per season.

Marshall and Jones for Griffey?

Assuming we can get them to bite that Marshall is a hugely valuable young pitcher with some upside, and tell them that to offset Jr.'s salay, they have to take JJ, i think we have a good deal here.

hopefully by the time of this deal, angel is ready to come back. Then you stick him at the back of the rotation.

Soriano

Theriot/Fontenot

Lee

Ramirez

Griffey Jr.

Derosa

Floyd/Pie

Soto

I don't get why Griffey would want to go to Atlanta. They definitely have no where to put him.

seriously? he would fit very well in left field. they're using a platoon that's qualified them for 12th in the NL in OPS from LF.

Unless Hendry has something else - ie, better - in the works, he and the Cubs brass are letting the team down if a doable deal isn't made to get KGJ on the North Side, for the remainder of this year and next.

If it came down to it, I would much prefer KGJ to Dunn every time.

what part of we are not taking on more salary don't you understand?

Bruce Miles did say the Cubs would be buyers. Who knows what they can do.

Please direct me to the quote where someone affiliated with the Cubs has said this.

Griffey would be a perfect fit in CF for the rest of this year and then slide over to RF when Pie is ready to play full time. That being said, the article mentions Chicago, but doesn't stipulate North Side or South Side. The Sox could certainly use him if they could afford him.

Yeah, I noticed this too. But would the Sox really be buyers at this point?

The Sox aren't going to be buyers. Also, I really don't want to see Griffey in CF. That's begging for another injury. I'm would already be worried about him getting hurt if he came to the Cubs. With his injury history and our bad luck, it's a disaster in waiting.

Can't imagine it'd be the Sox. They're busy as it is trying to ditch their 33 year-old, broken down OF. Can't see them unloading Conteras, Dye, etc. only to turn around and snag a 37-year old OF who hasn't had 500 ABs in a season since 1999. This last point is also why I'd still prefer Dunn over Griffey. With KGJ, we're guaranteed to see Pagan in in the starting lineup many more times simply by virtue of Griffey's likelihood to get hurt at some point.

KGJ might be a good guy to have around to kind of take Pie under his wing....

I would bet Pie is the center piece in the deal. This is a salary dump they're probably not wanting to take Jones back. I can see Pie and Marshall for Griffey. And I would do that in a heartbeat.

That would be an absolutely awful trade for the Cubs. I hope you aren't serious. That said, I'm all for getting Griffey, Jr., for the right price.

Griffey likes Atl b/c he lives in Orlando in the offseason, IIRC.

How about Gallagher, Petrick, and EPatt for Griff and some cash?

Me likey this lineup:

Soriano

Fontenot

Lee

Griff

ARam

DeRosa

Floyd

Bowen

We ought to catch the Brew Crew with that.

Noting against your trade idea, but I see no reason to mortage the future for KGJ. If the Cubs are taking on a good portion of the deferred salary they shouldn't have to give up much to get him.

I'd be willing to give them their pick of two position prospects or one pitching prospect but they have to take Jones.

But truely, I don't think the Cubs should trade for KGJ at all. He's having a good year, but one he's not likely to repeat ever again.

Griffey is old. He's not going to be an outfielder of the future or anything, so it benefits the Cubs to keep Pie, and the Reds need pitching anyway...something the Cubs always seem to have.

I see your point, but are we really mtging the future by trading Gallagher, Petrick and EPatt? The deal doesn't include Colvin, Veal, etc.

Yes I'm serious. I'm not high on Marshall or Pie. Marshall's a decent pitcher with decent stuff. I have no problem including him in any deal that nets us a big bat. Pie(meh) yes he's young and very athletic but I just don't see him ever being anything more than a low obp decent slugging(for a CF) outfielder.
