I do agree with Hendry (for once!!) if Kerry comes back that isn't just a boost it's huge with Marmol and Dempster you have a real nice back end of the bullpen.

The only reading from the gun that was announced was 92 mph

I haven't really been paying much attention, largely because I don't want to get my hopes up and then be crushed when he suffers another setback, but is that velocity pretty consistent with where he's been the past couple weeks?

91-94. touched 95. But his command has been excellent, and that's probably more indicative of his health.

his command started shaky yesterdaY, with his first 5 pitches balls but then he seemed to right the ship and only went to a 3 ball count 1more time

If I were Kerry I would be concentrating more on control than throwing 98 MPH heat. I'm sure he could do it, but at some point he's got to learn to get guys out at lower MPH to save that arm.

That's what I think Kerry's doing now. And it's slightly encouraging to me, although I refuse to open my emotions up again for another fall. With his breaking stuff 91-92 should be plenty to be successful out of the pen.

One of his changeups came in last night at 82 mph, thats got to suck after seeing Woods 94 mph fastball or nasty slider

It may have been me looking through rose colored glasses, but the highlights of Wood pitching on CSN (maybe 2 pitches) had me thinking his motion was much more calm and quiet than in the past. Wonder if he can maintain that with the inevitable surge of adrenaline the first time he pitches from the mound in Wrigley during a standing ovation.

FWIW, in Peoria he seemed to be throwing the ball a lot harder than what the gun had him at. His delivery did look smooth and I think it threw the batters off because they were constantly late on the fastball and extremely early on any off-speed stuff.

However, it was against low-A hitters.

Steve Stone was on the Score a few weeks back, and he was complimenting Kerry on his new mechanics, work ethic, etc... But he did say he had changed his mechanics, and we all know how much Stone used to be on Kerry for his mechanics.

Hopefully they bring him in when we are up 5 or down 5 so it's not a high adrenaline situation which would add to the adrenaline already in his system.

Knoxville News-Sentinel[/url]"]Wood pitches in Smokies' 5-2 win

Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood did not allow a hit in 1q innings Tuesday night in the Tennessee Smokies’ 5-2, Southern League victory over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx in Jackson, Tenn.

Wood, 30, is rehabbing from arthroscopic surgery on his right (pitching) shoulder. He has appeared in several minor-league stints over the past two weeks.

Wood replaced starter Ryan O’Malley on Tuesday with one out in the seventh inning and the Smokies (20-19) leading 5-2. He walked Erick Monzon, then struck out Rene Rivera and coaxed Chris Minaker into a popout to second base.

In the eighth, Wood got two groundouts and a popup to the infield.

Wood threw 15 of 24 pitches that were consistently clocked at 94 mph.

“I feel great,” said Wood, who has been on the disabled list all season. “Other than the first four or five pitches, everything felt fine.”

Good god I can't wait to see him take the bump! Hopefully he can stay healthy for two months. Man, this year is one feel good story after another...

Same here, in fact I just bought a new DVR and this will probably be the first thing I tape. I just wish I could be there to see his first appearance live. That standing o should be off the chart.

Finally the poor guy might be catching a break. Come on Kerry, have one more great run in you. Try and help finish what you started in '03.

God, if he makes his debut this season when I'm at the game on Friday, I will likely squeal like a little girl.

Can you tape that and put it on you tube.

I honestly had a dream last night that it was game 7 of the championship series and Wood convinced Piniella to give him the ball to start the game and finish what he started in 2003. I woke up before the out-come of the game.

If this season were truly The Run, Wood's return would be the icing on the best cake ever. It'd be nice if Prior were able to make it back for it as well, but if I had to pick only one of the two for sentimental reasons, I'd definitely pick Wood. I'm so unbelievably pumped about this.
