News as of 7/18, from Rotoworld:

Kerry Wood (triceps) allowed one run in one inning Tuesday during his second rehab outing with the Cubs' rookie team.

Wood is scheduled to pitch Thursday and Saturday with the Rookie League team and could join Single-A Peoria next week.

Source: Chicago Tribune

As of 7/19:

Wood went 1.0 IP with 1 H 0 R/ER 1 K and 0 BB with 1 GO and 0 FO.

He will pitch again on Saturday.

As of 7/21:

Wood: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 1 E

This may well be his last start at Mesa. Sounds like he'll be moved up in the minors.

It's a tired refrain at this point.

He's not back until he's back, and even then is he really back?

from the trib:

Dempster may go down to Class-A Peoria next week to get in a rehab outing before returning to the Cubs on July 13, but the right-hander has the right to veto a move and may feel he's ready to pitch again without testing his arm in the minors.

Another reliever who appears ready for a rehab stint is Kerry Wood, who reportedly is throwing well in bullpen sessions and could report to Peoria for a few outings soon after the break.

It won't take Wood long to rehab because he will be coming out of the bullpen instead of starting, and the idea of having Wood pitch for Peoria manager Ryne Sandberg, even for a game or two, is a marketing department's wildest dream.

If Wood is ready to return to the Cubs by the end of July or early August, the non-stop relief shuttle from Iowa and Double-A Tennessee finally may end.

The Cubs bullpen rebounded from a rocky start and had its best month thus far in June. Carlos Marmol (1.72 earned-run average in June), Will Ohman (3.75), Michael Wuertz (3.68), Dempster (2.45) and Bob Howry (2.57) have helped turn around what had been a sore spot.

Come on Woody, we're all pulling for you (well most of us anyway).

I'm with Soul. If wood comes back, he has to stay back for the rest of the season before I'll believe he's actually back.

That said, IF he manages to make it back, do they finally DFA Scott Eyre? Or do they send Marmol back down, despite the fact that he's the filthiest pitcher on the roster? They could just add him on and make him the 12th man (for how long they've talked about wanting to do this, I'm not really sure why it hasn't happened yet), but then which fielder goes? I'm beyond hoping that dead weight gets DFAd, so what then?

Then, if we shuffle all this up to make room for him, what do we do once he goes back on the DL?

We have to DFA Eyre.

Dempster

Wood

Howry

Marmol

Weurtz

Ohman

Guzman

If Demp or Howry are traded, add in Petrick.

Wow is that an amazing bullpen.

Even this being the Cubs...there is absolutely no way they send Marmol back down. He has been too good.

I think Kerry Wood doesn't throw one pitch for the Cubs this year.

Well I sure hope you are wrong. I really want this team to make it and for Kerry to be a part of it. I think he took game 7 in '03 really hard.

I hope I'm wrong too. But I just quit caring/paying attention to Wood and Prior a long time ago.

I wish I could, but I can't. I can't help but think what could have been.

I'm not keeping my fingers crossed, but if he can make it back to how he looked in spring training by August, that would be a huge help to this team. I'm going to pray now.

That's only one left-hander.

I know, but what left-hander would we bring up? Who'd go down. (unless demp is traded). I like wood, marmol, weurtz, and gooz.

So? The Cubs have essentially only had one left-hander for the last month and a half and it's worked out just fine. Eyre doesn't really count because he has just been coming in during blowouts and in blowouts it doesn't matter if the pitcher throws with his right or left hand.

Also, the Padres bullpen has gone between 0 and 1 left-handers all year, and they have been pretty good I'd say.

Doesn't matter what hand they throw with. What matters is if they can get guys out.
