I know that's his "thing". I'll admit I never followed the Cubs as much as I do now.

So I can only remember back so far. .

03 - Aram?

04 - ??

05 - Garciaparra

The trib being sold is going to take away some of that possibility. But will JH try to do what he usually does at the trade deadline?

We got Lofton and Aram in 03...along with Doug Glanville.

We got Garciaparra in 04

We got Lawton in 05 (<- lol)

I guess if there is a decent catcher or outfielder available we could try to pick him up, I don't really see it happening this year though since we were unable to deal Jones already because of the league (apparently)

btw, when is the trading deadline?

July 31

Quite honestly I'd like to see Cedeno and Soto given a shot before any trades are entertained.

I'd be shocked if they let Jim take on even more salary after his expensive plan has yielded a 2nd place, .500 ballclub.

I'd be surprised if Bud Selig lets the Cubs make a trade that will take on more salary.

Whatever. If Clemens is getting paid that ridiculous pro-rated salary, we can do whatever we damn well please.

If the Cubs can't, then the Yankee's and Boston have to subtract around $30 mil for their annual salary.

Why on earth would the commish have anything to say about it? He only bitches about paying over slot for draft picks... and understandably so, considering the talent we got in the 06 draft without having a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round pick.

At any rate, we have holes at C, SS, and CF right now, plus the potential to upgrade in RF.

At C, only Salty and Piazza are really available. Salty wont be much of an impact bat this year, and considering Piazza's defensive woes, we'd probably be better off just bringing up Soto.

At SS, there's really nothing available unless the Yankees fall way out of it this month. Even at that, I don't see Jim ponying up for Arod unless he gets him to agree to waive his opt-out. Again, most likely upgrade is just bringing up Cedeno.

In CF, Pie could turn it on and be a real impact player, but it seems likely he's a year away from being truly ready. Unfortunately, most teams with trade-candidate CFers are in the races right now. Andruw Jones, Ichiro, Torii Hunter, Eric Byrnes, Mike Cameron... all those guys are in the playoff hunt. And I don't see Jimbo trading for a guy with more than one year left on his contract simply to avoid blocking Pie.

In RF, Cliff Floyd is hitting well enough but is severely lacking power. Jermaine Dye, Ken Griffey Jr., and Bobby Abreu have all been made available. And there's always the chance we could play Adam Dunn out of position in RF.

I guess the point is that we aren't going to be able to acquire a real impact bat for the positions we currently have black holes at... so if we do manage to get an impact player, it's not gonna be as useful as it could be.

All of this brings one thing to my mind: solid, productive farm systems are a good thing. Wish we had one.

2001: Crime Dog

Sometimes baseball is a funny sport. Cubs were in first place when they traded for him to fill a black hole at 1B and bat 4th, giving Sammy some "protection". Cubs subsequently tanked. Similar to 2004, Nomar replaces Agony and the Cubs subsequently lose the WC spot.

If he played anything like what he has so far, Salty would be a huge upgrade. .323/.373/.495 and a 131 OPS+ is a whole lot better than anything Bowen, Hill or Soto would provide this year.

Granted, he may not keep that up all year, but he'll likely still be a good bit better than our current catchers. I'd call him an impact.

Ding, you win

I think it's in a little better shape than you are making it out to be.

It would have happened in 2003, too, if Prior and Wood hadn't gone on an incredible streak.

No...it's not. It's pathetic.

I'm not sure there will be a lot of impact players to be had.

Dunn may be traded. Griffey might as well. Who? might be shipped somewhere. Teixeira...maybe?

I just don't see a lot of impact guys going anywhere. There might be some marginal guys or guys with question marks moving. I could see Lofton or Sosa traded. Omar Vizquel could be moved. Maybe Brad Ausmus.

There's just not a lot of impact guys having impact quality seasons that are in their walk year. That in itself will limit what we have to acquire.

Were salary considerations not the stumbling block given the pending sale of the Cubs--as it seems to be--the logical move would be to acquire Junior and put him in CF. He may not stay healthy, that is true, but if you're going to roll the dice, he would be the best move of players that are likely available.

Pie just isn't ready for ML pitching, and Pagan is only useful as a reserve OF (he's fine in that role, but he is another guy that simply does not produce when used everyday). And of course, I have no desire to see Jock in CF.

The question I have asked before, no one seems to know other than speculation--what kind of relationship, if any, does Junior have with Lou? I believe Lou and Griffey Sr. are good friends, but other than that....

Marshall + Murton for Junior?

For what it's worth, Paul Sullivan had this in his article today:

Major League sources on Tuesday denied a New York Daily News report that Commissioner Bud Selig was the one who nixed the Jones-to-Florida trade, which means the Cubs are to blame for refusing to pay the bulk of the remaining $7 million on his contract.

Blame the bean-counters, not Bud.
