Do you guys think Lou and Jim will revisit Dempster as starter? Could they use the DL stint and all-start break to stretch him out with bullpen sessions, then send him on a rehab assignment?

I'm not saying it's a good idea, I just know lots of teams are hesitant to go with three lefty starters and the previous talk about a young fireballer to close and Dempster to start has me wondering if they'll do it.

there is no part of Dempster's history as a starter that makes me want to sign on to that idea

With how the bullpen has been worked lately I would think they will keep Dempster in the pen, probably closing. If Marmol continues to shine over the next 10 days. You might see Dempster as trade bait.

Hopefully the emergence of Marshall has put an end to any more Dempster to the rotation shenanigans.

There is no room for him in the rotation anymore. I think this can be put to bed.

If they moved Dempster to starter, it would be one of the stupider things I've seen happen during my Cubs fandom and my opinion of Piniella would drop considerably. I don't think it will happen though. If Lou wants to go with Marmol as the closer, then Jim would be well advised to trade Dempster at the deadline. There's always someone looking for a decent closer and we probably wouldn't have to pick up much, if any, salary next season.

Wow, somebody close this thread before Jim finds it. There is no way Demp could even approach Marshall's results these past few weeks. Regardless, Im not sold that the rest of the bullpen could handle the loss of Dempster over the long haul either so I think this would hurt both the starting rotation and the bullpen.

I could see them doing it because it's the Cubs and they do stupid things. With Guzman injured/in the bullpen, Cotts worthless and no other obvious 6th starter at this point, I could see them thinking Dempster would be a good fit. But I'd hate to see it. He's been a decent reliever, but an awful starter in his career. I'd have less faith in him than I had in Marquis this offseason.

We need Dempster in the bullpen, regardless of his closer status. Even if Marmol is lights out in his absence, Dempster should regain his closer role until he proves he is unworthy. His name and the starting rotation should never again be mentioned. I like the three lefty setup we currently have, although I wouldn't mind seeing Marshall & Hill separated - but it's been successful thus far.

That's what led me to the theory.

The idea to trade Dempster is intriguing to me, as he has a not overbearing, but still bad contract. Detroit could have interest in him if they would ever come to grips with the fact that Todd Jones sucks.

Detroit is in need of a mediocre closer, because the one they have now is trash. I'd like to see Demp shipped to Comerica.

Exactly, why move him to the rotation? (aside from the fact that he has sucked there) where would you put him?

Z, Lilly, Hill, and Marquis aren't going anywhere.

And Marshall has pitched his rear off since he came back up... no need to mess with the rotation.

As long as Neifi's not coming back the other way. The one good thing about him on Detroit is that he hardly ever plays and I don't have to curse his existence.

If Demp gets move to the rotation, there's no room for Wade Miller, so that idea is out.

What? Its not 2006 anymore?

Oh...well, its still a bad idea.

I really hadn't seen this article before I made my post.

at the end of the article--

"And if Marmol becomes the guy now, Dempster might be able to start making that transition to starter he was supposed to make last month. The Cubs aren't in the market for a starter, but a move like that would give them more depth and right-left possibilities in the rotation -- or the kind of quality pitching depth to trade for something useful at the deadline a month from now."

Maybe they could trade him as a starter?

I think I've seen enough of Gordon Whatever-meyer to determine that I don't like him.

Hell, I haven't liked him since that spring training game when Len and Bob had him on.

The only thing worse than trying to trade Dempster for no apparent reason would be making him a starter for no apparent reason.

They will probably throw him in the rotation and have him get shelled for a few games then try to dump him for peanuts.

I like the idea of trading him to Detroit or some other team that needs bullpen help. He's a "proven closer" to some extent and could be dealt now (after he's been back for a little while) for real value.
