Dumb White Sox

http://www.realgmbaseball.com/src_wiretap_archives/6542/20070627/buehrle_extension_near_in_chicago/

Chicago Sun-Times - Ken Williams' cell phone got a bit quieter Tuesday.

That's usually what happens when a team decides to pull its biggest bargaining chip off the trade table.

The Boston Red Sox, who had jumped out as the clear favorite to acquire White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle during the weekend, have pulled out of the sweepstakes, according to one source. And not because the asking price of top minor-league prospects was too high or because they no longer coveted Buehrle's services, but because Buehrle is no longer on the trading block for the time being.

Well they should pawn another starter off on Boston(Contreras?), cause they have no problem giving up top talent in thei rminor league system.

I'm not sure who he is but The Score is reporting that he and the Sox have agreed, in principle, to a 4 years/$50MM deal.

Maybe they'll focus on moving Contreras, Garland or Vazquez now to help re-build. Vazquez may be viewed as their best pitcher, so he could probably bring the most back in return. I sense moving Contreras will be their first choice.

Only a few days ago there was no chance of reconciliation, and he was as good as gone.

Now an extension? Odd.

I think both parties came to the realization that they are both better off sticking together.

It's not odd when you consider that Williams wasn't going to get anything near his value on the trade market (because he's a potential FA). Plus, the Sox have to field a more competitive team next year to survive in a Cubs town. The attendance at the Cell is down dramatically.

They can't afford to count on prospects. I also think this is a nod to their fan base; many of whom have been upset with the Buehrle trade talks because the Sox were refusing to offer more than a 3 year extension. Buehrle is one of the jewels to emerge from their MiLs (as much as Zambrano is for the Cubs).

Funny what a couple of wins over Tampa Bay will do for the team.

If Williams has brain one in that head of his, he better part with his potential FAs. They have ZERO chance of passing the Twins, Indians and Tigers. That is the toughest division in the game.

I would be thoroughly amused if they think they can still make the postseason and pass up the opportunity to bring in some young talent via trade just because of a couple wins versus Tampa Bay.

They do not think they can pass up all the teams. They only signed him because he obviously wants to stay, is very good, and they got a really good deal on him.

Damn, BoSox were gonna give up Clay Buchholz.

Apparently that was a rumor coming out of the White Sox to try to get more interest in Buehrle (forgot where I read that but I read that amidst all the Jacque Jones reading I was doing yesterday trying to find out why the trade was being held up).

Personally, they'd be better off keeping Who? and trying to deal Konekro, Crede, Dye, Podsednik, Iguchi...basically their whole offense needs to be replaced. Who? and Garland are still young enough to stick around for a 2 year rebuild.

So, I can't fault Williams there. This seems like a sound decision.

This is good for us. Leave him in the AL. When there was talk of the Brewers or Cards getting him I was a bit worried.

Amen to that one... not that I know who he is but I'd assume one of those teams getting another pitcher would be bad for us down the stretch.

I was under the impression that Williams is inclined to keep Konerko. Dye needs to go for sure. I guess I am just not sure how much he'll get out of the others, and thought Buehrle was his best negotiating piece.

If I were the White Sox, I would have traded him. Buehrle has shown to be inconsistent in the past, and he was by far the most sought after name on the trading block. Teams were likely setting up to bid on him with the White Sox getting to choose the highest bidder. The Sox aren't going anywhere anyways...doesn't make sense why they didn't trade him and get a boatload of talent in return.
