According to the Trib, it seems a near certainty that Buerle will be traded, the only question remains where.

Link.

It appears the Red Sox could be the leaders in getting his services.

At least seven teams have made serious contact with Williams, with three actually having the resources to pry Buehrle from the White Sox. The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets were the leading contenders until this weekend, with the Boston Red Sox now becoming the front-runner.

While Williams wouldn't acknowledge that Saturday, he didn't have to. Allard Baird, the Red Sox' assistant to the general manager, was in town Friday to watch the White Sox' loss to the Cubs -- in which Buehrle started -- and reportedly was to be sent out on assignment only when things were about to get serious.

And furthermore...

According to the source, the Red Sox not only want to keep Buehrle away from the New York Yankees and are willing to offer him a contract extension in the five-year range he is seeking, but they have a farm system loaded with players in whom the White Sox are interested.

Starting pitchers Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden are on the White Sox' radar, as well as speedy outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and shortstop Jed Lowrie.

Buehrle and Fenway seem like a terrible match.

The Sox have to trade Buehrle. He's not gonna re-sign, and they aren't gonna compete this year. If they could get Buchholz and Ellsbury/Lowrie, that would be a pretty good trade for them.

Sadly, Mark Buehrle may be the most sought after pitcher in the trade market this season. I would think the Braves would really jump into the talks, but I don't know that they would give up what it takes.

Buehrle grew up a Cards fan, and they will need SP. I think it's a near lock he's a Card in 08' if he doesn't sign with the team that trades for him.

i don't know if buehrle could pass the money boston will offer over stl. i know he's always wanted to be a cardinal, but boston can probably offer at least 10 mil more...

Have to wonder if this is Kenny Williams saying this season is lost.

Dye, Crede, Iguchi, Podsednik, and Jenks are in the last years of their contracts as well.

As are ex-Cubs Sisco and Aardsma.

They've lost 23 out of their last 28 games. I'd say their season is definitely lost.

I don't know if the Red Sox will give up Buchholz... he might be ready next year anyway. Bowden could probably be gotten, as could Ellsbury, though given the problems the Sox have had with Drew and Crisp, they probably would like to keep Ellsbury. Lowrie's a guy I'd be happy to see the Cubs go after, maybe in a prospect-for-prospect swap. But that's not likely.

In any case, if the White Sox pry a pitcher and a position player from those names above, I'll be impressed.

Jenks, Aardsma and Sisco are not free agents. I think Sisco's the only one who'll even be arb-eligible.

I'm not sure what Iguchi's status is, as I believe he was signed as a FA from Japan, and I don't know if things differ for players signed as FAs compared to those posted. I'm sure 1908 would know.

No way in hell I'd trade Buchholz and Ellsbury/Lowrie for Buehrle. I want in on a Z-trade to the Red Sox if those guys and Bowden are being mentioned in trade talks for Buehrle.

I will be extremely surprised if Who isn't on the Cardinals when the 2008 season rolls around.

EDIT: Oh, and he will be traded and soon. There is no way the White Sox are going to hold on to him and just let him walk at the end of the year.

Found this interesting tidbit:

Keith Law, on ESPNEWS yesterday, reported that the Mark Buehrle-to-Boston rumor is bogus and almost certainly planted by the White Sox front office
