I'm going to miss Barrett, but Rob Bowen may just be the next one in terms of catching on late and turning into a solid offensive catcher. He's OPSing nearly .900 away from Petco.

I like this deal.

What on earth makes you think that he's going to become a strong offensive catcher? He's needed a .385 BABIP to put up his meager batting average, and he has very little power.

wait a minute, was this really tied before I voted? If so some people here are just plain ol' dumb.

No, some people just hate Barrett.

Gotta love the personal attacks.

I am.

Good.

The Cubs are worse today. Barrett to Bowen is a big drop off. The Cubs are worse tomorrow. Two picks in the top 75 picks next year > Burke. It's not a hard thing to see.

Barrett to Bowen, I agree.

I'd rather see Soto over Barrett, Bowen, Hill, and Blanco. I'm not sure they'll call him up which they should but that's a separate issue.

I don't see a team signing him before 12/1 and the Cubs likely would not offer arbitration given how this season has progressed so far.

I definitely agree with you about Soto.

Even taking the two draft picks out of the discussion, a prospect who can't hit .230 in low A isn't worth the drop from Barrett to a catcher with a minor league BA of .238.

I know it's BA, but this guy isn't Gene Tenace.

W/out having seen him, I'm still optimistic that long-term he'll be better than what he has shown over his 1st year of pro-ball.

Bowen is a better back-up C than Hill, prob. will be DFA'd after the year and becomes the one year rental at C.

This trade all depends on Soto for me and whether or not he gets a shot everyday.

Why is everyone so excited about Soto? Besides being good in under 200 ABs in AAA this year, what has he done to make people consider him a likely candidate for starting catcher? He doesn't really have good minor league stats overall, I can't see anything in his stats that would suggest that he would make a great starting catcher. I very much doubt that he would replace Barrett's production.

CHEAP, good fielder, OBP over .350 each of the last three years. Yeah, he won't replace Barrett's run production offensively, but he'll contribute better defense and free up some money to be used in the offseason. Plus, Barrett has passed the point at which catchers peak, and will probably be declining from now until he calls it quits.

Bowen + Burke >>> An overpaid and aging Barrett through the 2010 season (and Hendry signing him long term cannot be ruled out of the equation)

thats simply not true. an aging barrett is a much better player than bowen.

bowens defense isnt any better than mbs. in fact in his career bowen has thrown out 5 of 50!

Doesn't that have a lot to do with this year, in which he has had to catch some of the easiest pitchers to steal off of?

Aren't his minor league CS numbers pretty good?

Most of the scouting reports I have read say he has a good arm, and it looks from a quick glance like about half of his SB allowed this season have come with Maddux on the mound.

yeah somehow he has gone from good at throwing people out, to having a "lousy arm." I'm gonna blame Maddux/Chris Young for this one, not Bowen.

This one stinks to the high heavens. Cubs are much worse now, and not much better tomorrow if at all. Bowen and Soto sure sound the same to me. So its all about the prospect and he doesnt look like i should be all that excited. And whats with sending the Pads $, its not as if Barrett is overpaid compared to him abilities.

Im trying to be a little open minded and give Jim some benefit of the doubt  But yes id rather see Soto in the bigs than Bowen from what ive seen on paper.
