... due to his "erratic, inattentive play," according to Ken Rosenthal.

Video link - hope it works. Otherwise, check it out through foxsports.com

Ken mentions that Piniella prefers a strong defensive presence; the video mentions Colorado and Florida as two teams, who might be in the market for an offensive upgrade at the catcher's spot.

Ken also talks about Tejada in LA as a 3rd baseman.

Colorado was also interested in a left-handed bat off the bench. I wouldn't be upset at all if the Cubs traded Barrett and Jones together for somebody decent (I don't think they'd get a great return, but who knows what the Rockies would be willing to pay because who knows how desperate they are to get in the race).

Blanco doesn't appear to be coming back anytime soon-so the Cubs would have Soto and Hill as their two catchers. That's not too big of a dropoff for the team for this year in exchange for a decent player and salary relief for next year.

Some more Barrett/Cubs opinions here from Bill Madden of the NYDaily News:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/2007/06/17/2007-06-17_chicago_dogs-2.html

"One suspects, too, that once catcher Henry Blanco comes back from the disabled list in two weeks, Hendry will do his darnedest to unload defensively challenged Mike Barrett, whose best hitting this year has been restricted to the blows he landed on Zambrano in their dugout/clubhouse fracas a couple weeks ago."

I'm really hoping they give Soto a good long look at catcher this year. Being able to go cheap at a couple positions (I'm thinking C, CF, and 2b or SS), will help the Cubs in the coming seasons when payroll gets crunched in 09, 10, and with the sale, there aren't going to be any big FA signings this offseason so if the team gets better, it will have to come from guys coming up through the system.

Might as well trade him if you aren't going to play him. This team isn't good enough offensively to have a weak hitting gloveman at the catcher spot. But hey, this team has been making terrible decisions for years why should they stop now.

Trading Barrett to an AL team seems to make more sense, but what do I know.

Which AL teams could use a C/DH? The Halos perhaps?

Nah. They are pretty happy with Napoli. Oakland hasn't been happy with Kendall, but I think they're kind of stuck with him.

On the bright side, Zambrano would be able to hit (at least) 6th when he starts.

If Lee and Ramirez suspension/DL stint overlap....I'd bat him 3rd.

Blanco had a setback is expected out longer - season-ending surgery has become a possibility.

screw that...barrett and jones for tulowitzski

Tulowitzki has been awful this year, granted he has big upside. Theriot and Tulowitzki have virtually been the same plyer, except Tulowitzki has hit a couple more dingers and Theriot has stolen more bases. Adding Tulowitzki would be a wash with the way he's playing right now, we might as well keep Theirot at SS and Fontenot at 2B. Plus if we trade Barrett we need a bat to supplement the loss of power from his position, and Hawpe fits the bill as well as the debacle in RF, and I'd miuch rather have Hawpe and his 139OPS+ over Tulowitzki's 84OPS+

I'd love to get Hawpe-but there's no way that Barrett and Jones even begins the conversation for him. The Rockies are not going to give up a player who's playing as well as he is if they are trying to make a run at a playoff spot this year.

Yeah, I know. It was sort of a pipe dream trade post, but hell if they're gonna shop him (big IF at this point), might as well find out what it would take.

Considering Tulowitzki was called up last season, the Cubs would have him under their control for a considerable amount of time. He also skipped AAA altogether, so some of his development time went flying out the window.

He'll get better with time. I'd do Jones + Barrett for Tulo in a heartbeat. However, something tells me that's not going to happen.

The Rockies have a pretty good system talent-wise, although many of them have been struggling or putting up unimpressive numbers on the season with a few exceptions (Greg Reynolds). Plus, the team has shown a complete blasé attitude about throwing around cash towards players who don't deserve it...so something tells me money wouldn't be a factor in terms of acquiring talent. I think they'd make a good trade partner.

Franklin Morales, please. I think he might be hurt right now, though. Morales or Tulowitski would be nice, but there's zero chance of it happening.

Yeah, as nice as adding Tulo would be, he is their #1 prospect and I dounbt trading them two older players with expensive contracts in comparison would be high on their to do list

I would be happy to relieve them of either Hawpe or Holliday.

I wouldnt settle for anything less than Hawpe, Holliday and Larry Walker in his prime. Think they might throw in Bichette, too?
