Hm. Interesting Q&A in Lou's press conference.

Q: Do you see Hill being the starting catcher more often than not the rest of the way?

A: Let's take this one day at a time.

Lou hates Barrett. He said something to him after Barrett was picked off, and Barrett decided to argue with him. I think he's looking for any reason not to play the guy.

That would be unfortunate, considering that Hill can't hit his way out of a paper bag, and Barrett was just starting to heat up, despite his poor fielding.

hill has had three hits in the last two days...including a sac bunt that was clutch

Got to keep his clutch bunts in the lineup.

I don't especially care what he has done in the last two days. He's been bad in his short stint in the majors, and his minor league numbers don't exactly jump out at you. He isn't even close to being the caliber hitter that Barrett has been the last three years.

Yup-two walks by DeRosa and Fontenot, K. Hill bunted them over, and Izturis hit a double to drive both runs in (8th inning).

Nice! I was just checking out Gameday! Izzy's always good for one of those clutch hits every 2-3 weeks.

When all is said and done, Barrett is going to get the majority of catcher at bats. But he's not an everyday player and he's very clearly messed up in the head right now. He's fighting with coaches and players, repeatedly in the middle of controversy and bad plays. Sitting for a couple days isn't going to kill the team.

That's a game the Cubs never win.

It honestly has been pretty admirable to see this team play well without their best pure hitter in the lineup. I really wish he'd get back though.

and Derrek Lee hasn't been Derrek Lee. They are winning because of their starters and the Pen has been pretty good recently.

Wow nice to get a comeback 1-run win! And how about that bullpen: 3 2/3 scoreless innings!

So this means that you guys are going to give "automatic out" Izturis a break for what, an hour or two?

On a different note, I was wondering if you guys know why Piniella made two moves that he did that really made me mad. Why did he leave Marquis in there in the 6th with the bases loaded? Why not bring in Weurtz?

Also, why was Jockstrap pinch-hitting (I can't remember whether it was the 6th or the 7th)? There were runners on the corners with one outs. I would have rather seen Pagan, Theriot, or Barrett rather than Jones.

Thanks for the insight.

I don't have a problem with him clearing his head for a few days. All I'm saying is that it is incredibly premature to start talking about replacing Barrett with Hill, which a few people have indicated they wouldn't mind.

Hey, the Cubs are good! They win 1-run games now!

Two 1-run wins the first 2 months of the year, 4 in the last 8. Heh. i guess they are clutch.

Nah, the other teams are just choking. :)

This is absolutely pathetic that the Cubs only got 3 runs off of Jeff Weaver in 6 innings.

careful there. the Cubs had a .390+ OBP against Weaver in this game. you bash them too much for failure to score more runs, you may be on the verge of accusing them of failing to be clutch

and Soriano has been putrid since the beaning.

I am still smarting over that 9th inning near homer he had in the first game of this series. Stupid wind.

The crappy Marquis has returned sadly, that is 2 starts in a row now and he has really taxed the bullpen. Shoulda took advantage when he was throwing like Cy Young.

One could argue that if DeRo doesn't make an error, the inning ends on a 6-4-3 DP and Marquis goes at least 6 innings with no ERs. I think hitting Weaver unnerved him because he was sailing along up to that point in the game.

Lou just called our 13 man bullpen "a little short" in his postgame conference.

It was short. Demp wasn't available and Eyre has been banished in close and late games (plus, he admitted that he didn't want to bring Rapada into a bases loaded situation) so he had to pick and choose between his available veteran arms.

Totally agree with that. It would have been unfair to the Rookie really. Of course if Leo Durocher was still alive and managing the Cubs, I could have seen it... something like- Welcome to Hell kid, strike this sum'@#!$ out.

Best part is that Lou wasnt even considering Ohman with the situation rapidly deteriorating. Maybe he is going the way of Eyre, just not so soon enough.

Okay, so I was at the game today and here are a few of my notes:

1-The home plate umpire drove me up a friggin' wall with his 10-second delay before calling a ball/strike.

2- Pie NAILED that triple, and holy crap can he fly. It's even more impressive in person. And in his second at bat...that shoulda been a home run. he missed by literally two feet and the wind was blowing in when he hit it.

3- Cesar Izturis? Seriously? hahahahhahah

4- Lee really made me mad. He looked so out of it. He just watched quite a few great pitches just float over the plate.

5- Ellison (I think thats his name...#9) is a prick. He fake-threw to the stands at least three times during warmups.

6- Pictures will follow in the Baseball Discussions thread.

he says the call verbally right away, so the people who need to know (the players) aren't waiting for a delay. sorry to inform you that the ump isn't there for the fans
