I'm with Goony, I want to go big (ARod) or go cheap. A mediocre, expensive vet like Eckstein doesn't do much to improve the team.

Totally agree.

Tell me, IF A-Rod opts out - isn't he losing $27 mil a year? He'd really be an idiot to do that.

I agree for the most part, but he already has a ton of money, and he would still get a huge contract, so maybe getting out of such a critical environment would be worth it to him.

Jones and Izturis add 0 value to any trade package.

These are the only 2 trade options.

Jim Hendry calls GM 1

Hey buddy, can you do me a solid, take this stiff Jones, I'll pay 75% of his contract, just give me some garbage prospect that nobody knows about so I can put out some spin on him.

Allright, we will do the deal for Zambrano, but if you are only gonna give us 2 top prospects you have to take this bum Izturis and 100% of his salary.

QFT, next to landing a ML ready prospect at SS or starting pitcher, the next best use for Zambrano would be to foist Jones on someone. Izturis not so much since we can just decline his option at season's end.

Well i think you have to look at the reality, big picture of the situation.

Right now he is under contract for 08, 09, and 10 for 81M and will be a FA at age 35. At that point he will probably play out the next 5 years for Shef type money at around 10-13M in todays money for an additional 50 to 65M. Sum Total is 131 to 146M.

If he opts out of his current contract at years end when he is 32, he can probably get someone to sign him at 23 to 24M a year pretty easily for a 5 year deal with the type of numbers he is putting up. Thats 115 to 120M. Tack on 3 more years at 10 to 13M and you are talking about 145 to 160M.

More earning potential plus he gets to select a place that he would like to play. Maybe he wants out of NY, or maybe he just wants to stick it to the Yankees financially for making him deal with the circus. Either way, its a smart business decision.

As a Red Sox fan, I'll formally offer you Lugo for Izturis.....

He's got 3/81 remaining.

If he opts out and signs a 5/125 he makes $2m less per year for the next 3, but guarantees himself $44m that wasn't guaranteed before. Not to mention he gets to avoid being blamed for everything bad that happens to the Yankees.

He'd really be an idiot to not consider the option.

It's not like he'll be forced to sign for the minimum if he opts out.

BABIP:

'04: .327

'05: .327

'06 (w/D-Rays): .335

'06 (w/Dodgers): .274

'07: .233

Maybe he's just been really unlucky with the Dodgers and the Red Sox, but boy has he been bad over the last calendar year or so.

ding ding ding. He would gladly take a little less per year for more long term. I really think he is going to be a viable option. One of the keys is the Yanks no making the playoffs ;-).

Or make the playoffs and have ARod struggle in a division series sweep loss.

Dipping from $27M/yr to $25M/yr is one thing.

But what if he's looking at offers in the $20M range? IMO that's much more realistic. Maybe even lower. $20M is a tough nut to crack these days.

3/81 looks pretty good next to 5/100 or 6/120.

Soriano making $18m as a player who couldn't hold ARod's jock makes me think $20m won't be that hard to crack for ARod. 3-4 years ago the $20m barrier didn't look like an easy target, but we're back now.

Even still, I think 6/120 looks significantly better than 3/81 for a 30 something player who takes the kind of BS ARod has to take in NY.

Pretty good point. Do you think the Cubs would be able to handle another contract like that?

My roommate's cousin is a 20% owner of the Orioles. We went to dinner with him and his family last week.

Of note, he told us that he vetoed a Prior for Bedard/Tejada deal because he was worried about potential injury problems, haha.

Anyway, it really made my mouth water for Miggy...

Can we still do this trade?
